Trainer pants?

We're currently potty training DS a la nude style but we do need to eventually introduce underwear, I keep hearing about trainer pants, are the cloth ones any good or are they the same as pull ups/they just think it's another nappy?

I'm worried that since he used to be in cloth nappies he'll think they're the same
