Hi guys,

My bubs has had a myriad of feeding issues from day one but after changing to Soy about 8 weeks ago she's been much better, although constantly constipated unless on drops.

I have been trying (with my health care providers) to wean her back to cows milk based. I was giving her one bottle a day of a hypo allergenic formula (broken down proteins) and that seems fine, although it did make her poops more "normal".

But today i tried to up it to 2 bottles out of her 5 and we had 3 poops, all with mucous in them, and she's been left with a red bottom. She was also unsettled: back to her old crappy nap habits.

So does it sound like a lactose problem? Or a CMPI? I thought it was CPMI but I don't know- does lactose make the poops mucousy?

Just want my bubs to be able to have her food without drops for constipation ON TOP of her reflux meds AND having to have soy!! :dohh:

Mine could not do any kind of cows milk based formula even the broken down one. It was still made of milk. It always caused massive loose stool, nasal discharge, and vomiting. If you baby is happy on soy why are you changing it. I would stay with what works. Besides if you look hard enough there is a problem with every formula so they say- this one has hormones, that one is made from corn, that one has high fructose corn syrup and so on. I say constipation is the lesser of two evils. I would much rather a couple of drops for constipation that having a raw bottom and unsettled baby. By the way the soy greatly improved my kids reflux problems. I would wait a bit to try and wean her back to the other.

we're coming off soy due to fertility issues in later life and growth problems in boys if given soy before 6mths old and sam at the time only 9 weeks old so we felt too long on it. he's not suffering any allergy symptoms on the neocate but it does aggravate his reflux :( but, that can be alleviated with carobel once he's fully on the neocate (mixing in with soy 1/2 oz more every 2 days).

your's does sound like allergy to cows milk and as pp said, hypoallergenic still have cows milk in.

neocate lcp has cows milk, neocate AAA doesnt, and some other milks that aren't commonly used are lactose/ cows milk free, but gp may not know of them, have you been referred to paeds dietician? hv can refer you.

:)

I know there's a lot of heresay about the infertility thing for boys but I haven't read any ACTUAL proof of it- do you have the studies backing it up? As I would be interested to read them: the only links that have been shown to be POSSIBLE (but not PROVEN) are links to longer, more painful periods and uterine fibroids, which is obviously both for girls. So if you have just read about it on a website or two don't stress about it: it's all speculation and soy formula has been around for 40 years already. After reading the studies linking the problems for girls I felt terrible :( And there is DEF no link between intellectual disabilities etc, that has been disproven.

I am in Oz so I don't know about any of those formulas or what a HV is :haha: Hehe. I was wondering if lactose free might be an answer...

not just internet unfortunately. paeds dietician asked us to take him off it, they've even stopped prescribing it on the nhs for that reason :(

although he's happy enough on it, we talked it through and decided that if he'll take the neocate and we can control the reflux then we'd rather him come off it.

i know there's always conflicting studies and this is part of the problem, there haven't been any significant long term studies of both boys and girls who were on soy before 6mths old, and that'll take a few years to get done i suspect.

x

:( Hate it, feel like such a bad mum for it!! I'm setting my baby up for crappy things.

Neocate lcp has no cows milk atall in it. It is made up on amino-acids and nothing what so ever to react to. Also theres no such thing as Neocate AAA. Its Nutramigen AA and very similar to Neocate although i have found my lg is much better on Neocate.

In answer to the first poster yes it does sounds like CMPA/I. Im surprised she's done so well on soy as babies are ofter allergic to soy too. My lg's consultant says soy is a big 'no no' because of this. I would personally ask for Neocate and maybe stronger meds for the reflux.

Thanks but I don't think Neocate exists here. Will head back to paeds soon to further discuss options. Sigh.

Thought he was 100% better on soy but now he's taking more neocate he's even better! So think maybe slight intolerance to soy? Just not as bad as cows milk?

Yeh, the dietician told me cows milk protein still in neocate, but yep, checked the tin and nada on the cows milk!!

Going up to 4oz neo, 2oz soy tonight -cant wait til Friday! Should be fully on neocate then :)
