is actually a food monster!

She's growing up, and it seems I no longer satisfy her

She was sat in a high chair today, all by herself, totally unsupported and I tried her with some pureed fruit and baby rice, which she wolfed down and cried for more! ... Where has the time gone?! My baby is growing out of her baby-stage; she always wants to play now, and does something new and more grownup every day... Gone are the days when she would lay contented in my arms for hours on end! And gone are my hour-on-end resting periods where, "Oh sweetie, be a dear and fetch us a cuppa, would you? She's eating! Oh and you'll do the washing up to as she's not coming off anytime soon? Fantastic. Love you."

It's exciting, but scary and a little sad, too.

Is it okay for her to eat like this? She also had a pack of baby carrot flavoured crisps today, and loves to munch on biscotti... The health visitors and guidelines say to bf exclusively, up until 6 months, but she's just not satisfied with my milk anymore.... I can tell she wants more.

We had her last check up with paediatrics, until next April, recently (follow-up from SCBU), and the doctor was shocked that I'd started her on solid finger food, and told me that her tummy wouldn't be able to handle it yet - am I doing something wrong??

Four- to five-month-old babies are sometimes very eager to participate at mealtime, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are ready to eat solids - more often it's just the normal developmental urge to do what everyone else is doing. Research studies tell us that there are many health advantages to delaying solids for about 6 months for all babies, not just the babies who are not yet interested in mealtime.

There are a number of things you can do to let baby participate in mealtimes without starting solids:

Let baby sit with the family at mealtime - in a lap, booster seat or high chair.
Give baby a cup of water or expressed milk. Your baby can entertain himself at mealtime while learning to use a cup. 1-3 ounces of water in the cup should be plenty (often for the entire day). Many moms choose to use only water or a small amount of breastmilk to avoid wasting the "liquid gold" while baby learns to use the cup.
Offer baby sips of water from your cup or straw. Even if baby hasn't figured out how to use a straw yet, you can put your straw in water, block the top end of the straw with your finger to trap a little water in the straw, then let baby drink the water from the lower end of the straw (unblock the top end once it's in baby's mouth).
Offer baby spoons, cups, bowls and other baby-safe eating utensils to play with during mealtime.
Give baby an ice cube (if it's a baby-safe size & shape) or ice chips to play with.
Offer baby a momsicle (popsicle made from breastmilk) or slushy frozen breastmilk to eat with a spoon.

Aww.. she sounds like she did great!

Colton has had finger foods.. well, he has had biter biscuits, by Gerber (Graduates). He loves them!! Usually theres almost nothing left by the time he slobbers and sucks and naws on them.. it's messy though! Always in his nose and everything! But it's adorable.

When we are eating something he will get so excited. We dont give him any of our food of course, but when he sees us eating his whole face lights up and he gets excited-kicking his legs and smiling. It's so funny, but I feel like I am teasing him :( :dohh:

Some babies are ready earlier then others. And your baby will let you know, which she obviously has!

As long as you watch her bowel movements and she is not getting an upset tummy, there is nothing wrong with giving her regular foods. Babys all develope at different speeds, and she will definately let you know if she cant handle something. Also do not feed too many new things at once.

In Canada we have special beginner cereals and things made to slowly introduce new things to digest for the baby... Not sure if you have anything similiar.

Our guidlines here say when the baby is able to hold their head and neck stable then they are safe to integrate foods.

Dont worry hun, Rhys was on solid finger food by 4months and 2weeks.. she sounds like shes doing great!

Sounds like she's doing great hun! Go Hannah! xx
Josh loves his cereals and has mastered the spoon really quickly.

I let him suck on fresh fruits sometimes... Bad bad bad mommy! He loves it though..

Bless her! Growing up so fast! Sam's just started food now too...he's only had a day of it and didn't seem too impressed  x

Haha!So cute! She'll be eating you out of the house soon.
