Well, I've been quite busy since my baby was born two months ago and I am just now getting around to writing my birth story!!

My birth story starts actually 3 weeks before my due date. I had been slowly dilating from 36 weeks with irregular but painfully uncomfortable contractions, what my Dr called prodromal labor. This came with hip and lower back pain that kept me from being able to walk most of the time, major heartburn, difficulty breathing due to my asthma, barely able to sleep due to the contractions and lots and lots of cramping and pressure. At my 36 week appointment I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced, same at 37 weeks, at 38 weeks I was 2-3 cm dilated and still 50% effaced.
I went to the hospital at 38 weeks 5 days with consistent contractions that were increasingly painful and every 5 minutes apart. I was in triage for hours, but the contractions were not dilating me any more than the 2-3 I was already dilated, so after hours of walking the halls of the hospital with nothing but disappointment, I was sent home.
At 39 weeks and 3 days I was so fed up with everything, I was still having painful, consistent contractions but they were not increasing in intensity or length (only about 30-45 second long) so we were still stuck waiting. That evening I decided I was going to try walking to see if anything started up. My parents live right around the corner from the high school that my dad works at, so my mom picked me up and we went to the high school to walk the track. I think I made it ¾ to 1 mile, cannot remember for sure, but I was so sore and all I can remember was thinking “just one more lap, this could be the lap that gets this baby out!”
That night I went home after walking and took a warm shower, and went to bed. I woke up at 3am with much more painful contractions than before, and started getting hopeful. Of course, they were still inconsistent, every 5-10 minutes with some random ones being 15 minutes apart, and they were about 45 minutes long. At about 6 am, my husband woke up and got ready for work; before he left he came back to bed to check on me and decided that he was going to stay home with me instead of going to work. He called his boss who was fine with this. He was only scheduled to work a half a day anyway because we had an OB appointment in the afternoon.
Throughout the morning and early afternoon before my appointment, the contractions became increasingly painful and I had to breathe through them. I called my mom and told her to stand by; I was hoping that when I went to the Dr they would check me and send me straight to the hospital! All I could do on the way to the Dr (it’s an hour drive) was hope and pray that I would not be coming home that night! I had packed my bags weeks ago and everything was already in the car, so we were ready to go!
Once we got to the Dr office, things got really frustrating. They were backed up with appointments so we waited an hour! The whole time I was having contractions and the front desk girls were so nice and even went to tell the Dr that if she didn’t hurry up, they may have to deliver my baby in the waiting room!! We finally got in to see the Dr and I was 4 cm dilated, still 50% effaced. The Dr stripped my membranes while she checked me. I almost started crying, I was really hoping for more progress!! But then my Dr told me that she was on call at the hospital that night and she was getting ready to leave the office and head over there in 20 minutes. She said for women who are in prodromal labor, the best thing to do is break their water and usually that kick starts active labor. She told me “I can meet you at the hospital and break your water within an hour”. Yay!! Things were happening!!
My husband wanted to stop and get something to eat, so he went through the drive through at In and Out :)
While he ate I called my family and friends to let them know what was going on. My mom started on her way to the hospital and my hubby and I got there and because my Dr had already informed the hospital I was coming, we completely bypassed triage and went straight into a labor and delivery room!!

I was starting to get nervous at this point, I was so ready to be done being pregnant and to meet my beautiful baby who I had been dreaming of my whole life, but I was also getting scared of labor. My plan the entire pregnancy had been to do it completely natural, but at this point after 3 weeks of ongoing prodromal labor I was not sure if I could stick to my plan. I was already so tired and had been in pain. My husband and mom were so supportive and just told me to see how much I could handle and I could make any decision I wanted.
After a bit my Dr came in and broke my water, it was such a weird feeling! The contractions started getting super intense and painful instantly, and I could tell pretty quickly I would not be able to handle it without pain meds. I labored for two hours on my birthing ball and when they came and checked me I was only 5 ½ cm dilated. At this point I figured it would be a long night and I could not handle hours and hours of that pain, so I begged for the epidural.
The anesthesiologist came within 10 minutes and once that epidural was in I was in heaven!!! I was able to rest and relax, my husband turned the lights down and put Friends on the TV so I was just able to relax and enjoy myself :)

After two hours of resting on the epidural, they checked my dilation and I was at 9 cm!!! They said that often times when a mommy is really tired and tense, the epi can relax her enough that her body will just dilate super quickly. My mom looked at me and said “you are going to have your baby in your arms really soon!”
At that point, the epidural started to wear off and I could feel so much pressure in my butt, like I needed to push. They topped off the epidural which took the pain away but NOT the pressure. I still had about a ½ cm of cervix that was not dilated, and I had such an intense need to push that I was begging them to let me. The nurses explained that if I pushed right now and my cervix tore it would require an extensive surgery to repair! So I spent about an hour doing the best I could to not push, breathing through every contraction and fighting the urge to push with everything I could. I’ll tell you, fighting that urge was the hardest part of my entire labor and delivery experience!! Even now I cannot think of ever having to go through anything more difficult to handle. The urge to push is so strong, my body was literally doing it on its own and I was fighting it the whole time.
After an hour of that, I was finally dilated enough to push, and that was the greatest feeling ever!! There was so much pressure in my butt, I remember always being told “pushing will feel like you are having the biggest bowel movement of your life” but I never realized that I would literally feel everything in my butt!! The nurse was helping me to feel the pushing by putting her fingers inside and telling me to push them out. I pushed for 45 minutes, which brought the baby down considerably. At this point I asked for a break from pushing, and the nurses said it was fine. I took about 45 minutes break, just breathing through the contractions instead of pushing through them. I still had the epidural, so I couldn’t feel pain, but I was feeling immense pressure. After my brief break I felt stronger and I was ready to push again, so my hubby called the nurses back in. I started giving really good pushes and they could see her head! It was coming down and then going back up in between pushes. The nurse told me if I gave a couple more really good pushes they would be ready to call the Dr in to deliver my baby!!
I pushed with everything I had, I was so tired but I was so ready to be done. They called my Dr in( Thank God she was on call that night, there was a pool of about 13 different Drs that I could have got- such a blessing to have mine!) and they started getting the room ready for my baby! It was so cool, even in the middle of the pressure I was feeling I was watching them set up the warmer bed and getting all the towels and papers down, it was such a cool feeling knowing that my baby would be there in a matter of minutes!!
My husband was on my left holding my leg, the nurse on my right, and another nurse was down next to the Dr. my mom was standing behind my hubby and everyone was so encouraging and cheering me on during the pushing. At one point I said “I can’t do this” and my Dr said “well, you have to!” That’s one of the reasons I loved her, she just tells it like it is!
I gave a few good pushes and I started to finally feel the pain and burning in my vagina, up until now it was only pressure in my butt. She was crowning!! It was incredibly painful but also the greatest feeling, I cannot even describe it! I could hear my mom crying saying “she’s almost here!!” and my husband was right by my side, not saying much but his presence was just so comforting and strengthening to me ( I found out later that he was having major stomach issues, he struggles with IBS sometimes and just happened to be dealing with it while I was in labor! Poor hubby :( ).
The burning got really intense and I kept waiting for someone to say “the head is out!” but no one ever did! I guess I expected that because you always see it on A Baby Story or in movies! No one said it, so I just kept pushing assuming that she was still all the way inside, but before I knew it I felt her slide out(Strange but super incredible feeling!!) and she was on my chest! My husband managed to get a picture of the first moment I saw her when they placed her on my chest, it was the most incredible moment of my life and I tear up every single time I look at that picture!!
She was absolutely perfect! Before labor really started my mom, husband and I all took guesses as to how much she would weigh, my mom guessed 8 lbs 4 oz, my hubby 7lbs 9 oz, me 7 lbs 8 oz. After she came out the Dr said “she is smaller than you thought she would be!” and when they weighed her she was 6 lbs 7 oz :) our tiny little princess!! She was 19 ¾ inches long. 9s on her APGAR right away, and she was so alert just looking all over the place! She knew my voice and stopped crying when I was talking to her, it was the greatest feeling ever.
As for her name, originally it was to be Ariana Isabelle, but I had the idea of naming her Ariana Summer if she just happened to arrive on the summer solstice, June 21st. Well, she did, and I gave her daddy the choice of sticking with Isabelle or taking Summer as her middle name, and he loved the idea of Summer. So, Ariana Summer Bona it is. :)
I had a minor 2nd degree tear and had several stitches but I didn’t even feel them, I didn’t know the Dr was stitching me up until I looked down and realized she was still down there!! The placenta came out all on its own; I didn’t even have to push.
Little Ariana, or Ari for short (also called Monkey due to her super activity in the womb which has continued outside as well:)) is absolutely perfect. She is the most beautiful baby! She had a cone head and some bruising on her head due to two hours of pushing, but the cone was gone within 24 hours and the bruising was gone in 4 days. She is a healthy eater and even though she lost 4 ounces between birth and her first Dr appointment 3 days later, she gained it all back plus 5 more ounces a week later! She did have a little bit of jaundice but it went away with constant breastfeeding and some minimal sunlight exposure.
Now, at 2 months 3 days old she is 9 1/2 lbs and 21 1/2 inches long. She is growing perfectly and passed all the developmental milestones with flying colors!
I am so, so in love with my daughter. I have wanted to be a mommy for my entire life, and this is my dream come true. You can see her pictures on my instagram @sassymrsbee.
Thank you for reading my long story!!

Congratulations on your new arrival! Great name! :winkwink: :hugs:
