Hi there I havn't been on here for quite a while but I am 24 weeks pregnant at the moment, everything is fine, hba1c of 5.4....blood sugars are nice a stable.

My question or query is, at 12 weeks pregnant I was advised to take a low dose of aspirin by my obstetrician, her reasons were to prevent things such as pre-eclampsia, hypertension and blood clots etc.....

This is my second child and with my previous pregnancy it went as smoothly as any other normal person, none of the complications a so called diabetic can occur during pregnancy, so at the beginning I was a little reluctant to taking it as there was no real indication that I should take it from previous problems (blood pressure is and always has been fine)

My main concern was the retinopathy that I have been getting treated for the past year or so, I didn't want the aspirin to cause an unnecessary bleeds whilst pregnant....anyway I spoke with my eye doctor and he was reluctant too but said I should do as the obstetrician advised for my babys health and he would do his best to help if any problems did occur.

I had some laser a couple of weeks ago which has had no effect and today was told I have had a bleed which he cannot do anything about as it may cause more problems, I just feel that if I had not taken the aspirin for several weeks this would not have happened, I have stopped the aspirin now and hoping it will stop :(

Has anyone got any advice on aspirin causing bleeds in eyes???

I completely understand that aspirin is for good use in some pregnancies but I feel for mine it was the complete wrong advice to give or prescribe.

Thanks in advance :)

I can empathize with the retinopathy and lazers from bleeds. I've been diabetic type 1 for 35 years and had horrible retinopathy diagnosed at 19. Mnay many lazers up until 27. Had my first pregnancy at 29 and was never told to take aspirin for it. I just had to go to more appointments then normal. I have been very lucky and havn't had any more bleeds and now I'm 43. But the fear and possibilty is always there. My second pregnancy at 41. again I wasn't told to take anything. No bleeds but a different type of problem with pressure. Luckily it went away after I had the baby but I was told that some type 1 diabetics can loose sight in an eye while pregnant but majority of the time it comes back within a few months of having baby. So far third pregnancy everything is good eye wise. Again, never told to take aspirin.

Just to add, I was never told not to take aspirin either. So maybe it was just fate. An unfortunate time to have a bleed. I was always told just to be careful with heavy lifting, weight lifting (even light weights) and not to get punched in the eye.lol
I did take baby aspirin my first pregnancy just because I was paranoid and thought it would help with possible miscarraiges. And I had no bleed.

I'm really sorry i'm only 12 weeks and have just been told to go on aspirin incase of high BP (even though i've never had high BP before and aren't at risk unless as diabetics we are at risk) my eyes have shown changes at my appointment a couple of weeks ago, i know pregnancy can make this happen but my hba1c has never gone above 6% so its abit of a kick in the teeth for me.

I would do as you do and stop the aspirin, i've just googled it and it seems there is a link. It seems they want to put us on all sorts "just incase" and to me it doesn't seem neccessary, if i end up with high BP then of course i will take the tablets but until that happens i don't see the need x

Hi there, I am to see my obs who put me on the aspirin this tuesday so I will be seeing what she has to say, but she was adamant that her guidelines were correct and safe, I'm sure they are in some cases but I think as diabetics we have have to be very aware of our treatments and there effects on us, I won't be taking it anymore unless like you say one of the "might happen" complications actually do happen.....good luck and I will update on tuesday xx

Well todays appointment went better than I thought, got my c-section booked for the 28th May :)
Baby is fine, I explained my feelings about the aspirin and it seemed to be left as it is which is me no longer taking it, my midwife also mentioned that I had made the right decision by stopping to take it so I don't feel as though I am doing wrong knowing its not everyone's choice....just got to wait for the results of the last laser treatment as to weather I have to have more
Fingers croosed its good news xx
