So, I bought my little fella home from the hospital today & I'm not really sure what I'm doing with his clothing at night. He's currently lying in his Moses basket next to us with a long sleeved vest, thin fleece sleepsuit, three blankets, scratch mitts, and a little hat.
When we go to bed after his feed, I have a 2.5 tog sleepsuit. I was going to just out it on over the clothes he is wearing, but should I put a blanket over him? Our bedroom is pretty bloody cold - I've been wearing leggings, pj bottoms, a vest top, then a tshirt, and we sleep under a fleece blanket beneath our duvet.

I have a thing about heating, it cost us an absolute BOMB last year and I can't have another £1300 bill this year!

I've caved and put it on tonight for a few hours throughout the night, but I can't do that every night. Electric heaters are a killer :(

I'm not too sure to be honest as our fire heats our radiators but I just had to say its best not to put a hat on baby when sleeping at night. I believe it's because heat escapes through their head and a hat can cause baby to over heat?! Someone correct me if I'm wrong :) it's all to do with reducing SIDS.

as previous poster mentioned it is advised that babies don't wear an hat inside as it increases SIDs risk due to overheating as heat escapes from their head. We invested in an economical electric oil heater with a built in thermostat that is set to 18 degrees and our baby sleeps in a sleeveless vest and a sleepsuit with a knitted blanket folded once tucked under his arms and a thin fleece blanket loosely draped over him. Hope this helps

Long sleeve vest, baby grow with mits turned over and in a sleeping bag. If it is really cold I put a cellular blanket over her.

Basically if she feels warm when I change her bum I don't bother with th blanket. Her hands are always cold but her body is normally toasty warm.

Our room I always 18-19 degrees at night at the moment so he's in a vest, babygrow and cellular blanket over him. When it gets colder he'll go into a sleeping bag

Have you got a thermometer? If I remember correctly, the grobag guide says if you're using a 2.5t bag, baby should have on either a long sleeve vest or baby grow if the room is 18-20, short sleeve vest and baby grow if its 16-17. But our LO wears a long sleeve vest, baby gro and 2.5tog grobag and room is 18c roughly, I find that's ok - I check the back of his neck to make sure he's not too hot.

I feel for you re the heating bills - we live in Glasgow where its bloody cold a lot of the time and our electric heating cost us £2200 last year! Xx

Feel your baby. Let their skin (not their hands & feet....they are always cold!) guide you. My first son was always hot. He was constantly sweating bullets. My 6 week old is cold & shivers often. So I have to dress them differently. But I keep the temp at 66 degrees (F) over night. And wear two pairs of pajamas on him, one typically lighter & one a little heavier. Then I swaddle him in a blanket & put another blanket over him. Please use caution when layering & using blankets though. Blankets are not recommended due to SIDS. If your baby is warm or sweating, they are too warm!

My room is currently 19 degrees and sometimes drops to 18 during the night. I currently dress Thomas in a short sleeved vest, baby grow and 1 tog sleeping bag but he seems to be a warm baby. I am forever feeling his back (he's a tummy sleeper) and he always feels warm enough. When we first brought him home it was around the same temperature and we put him in a short sleeved vest, baby grow and a fleecy blanket and he was fine.

As long as your LO isn't too hot then they will be fine. My midwive told me that it's better for a baby to be on the colder side rather than the warmer side because of the risks of overheating.

Congratulations on your new baby :) x

Our room is always 19 degrees at night. My LO wears a short sleeved vest, a long sleeve on top and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag and although her hands are always a bit cold, she's always toasty warm on her body.

My house is too hot thanks to our hot water storage so LO generally only wears a sleepsuit and I cover her with a blanket. It's generally around 23 degrees in our room but can go up to 25 overnight as the heating clicks on & off.

That seems like a little too much, it's always better to be a little cold than too warm, babies will moan if too cold but just over heat if too warm, if you have a real grow bag it should of come with a thermometer.

At 14 months he still wears the same to bed as he did as newborn, a short sleeved vest, a regular onesie and 2.5 tog bag when once he was 8lb, before the bag he had 1 blanket doubled over. That should be enough for it drops to 15c.

And no hat when indoors :)

Our bedroom is around 21c when he goes to bed but in the middle of the night it drops to around 15c. His hands/face are pretty cold most of the time but the rest of him his generally nice and toasty. We dress him in a bodysuit/onesie and a 2.5 tog grobag (sleeping bag). That's all he needs.
Remember it's better for them to be too cold rather than too hot!x

Your room needs to maintain a temperature of 17-20 degrees. My baby has always worn long sleeved vest with either PJs (with feet and mitts turned) or babygrow. We co-sleep so he only needs one blanket in my arms though if in his cot I'd use 2 blankets tucked in all round and pre-hat with a water bottle (remove 5 min before putting baby in). I don't like sleep sacks.

Our room is quite cool. When I first brought him home he was in a vest, babygrow and a doubled over blanket sometimes with a thinner second blanket, which was enough when he didn't kick it off!! But he started to wriggle around and kick them off and cry because he got cold, so now he's in a sleepingbag, and like another lady a few times he's been cold when I change his nappy so put a thin blanket on him too. Our room is about 17/18degrees, even with the heating on, and the rest of the flat is very warm!

LO's room tends to be around 19 degrees, she wears short sleeved vest, sleepsuit with covered feet and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. If it felt extra cold I would put a cellular blanket over her button half.

Our bedroom is a lot cooler than the rest of the house so since Amy could safely fit in a sleeping bag it's been a vest, sleep suit and sleeping bag, plus a cellular blanket if I think it's too cold. Xx

Hmm...we are currently on the Scottish Islands and have had major storms and snow over last few days and DD has been in vest, fleecy babygrow with mitts, 2.5 tog grobag, two cellular blankets and a woolly shawl draped over the top of the basket and she still didn't sleep well as she was cold :( my DD seems to have taken after me and is very sensitive to the cold though. I always worry about her overheating but her neck felt cool and she won't sleep if she's not toasty x
