Evening Ladies

I am currently trying to sell jewellery on Ebay for some income but it's tough competing.

I would be interested to know if any of you are self employed and work from home and what is it that you do.

Need some ideas to increase my income with ability to fit it in around lil ones.

I looked into doing the catalogue drop like Avon, Aloe Vera and the other catalogues which you can get involved in but I know Mum's who have tried and they do struggle to make money doing this.

Any ideas welcome and appreciated.

Many thanks

My best friend and her Mum run a local Arbonne independent consultancy and they make a small fortune from it through networking with Mummies and their babies. The products are fab high end but expensive (until you become a client or consultant to receive a significant discount).

My friend is very sociable and outgoing and plans her business around bringing up her three children. She exploits selling high end, healthy and toxic free arbonne products to a captive audience. It's not for the shy at heart and she says she does a lot of paperwork at night after the kids have gone to bed but she genuinely loves it and the company are very good to her.

I have recently started a cupcakes business, it is still early days and very slow but I am gradually picking up more business as time goes on so we'll see. Cupcake and cake making is very popular among people wanting to work from home so if you enjoy baking then that could be an idea?

If you want to use your jewellery making for an income, try getting involved in local craft fairs to make yourself known. Youm ight have to pay £20 each time however you'd make that back within the first 1 or 2 sales and get yourself known at the same time.

Good luck!

xx

Thanks for responding and Good luck with your cupcake business.

I did think about the fairs but one small problem, my kids are young with one still at home and my husband works all the time so wouldn't have childcare to cover when fairs are on. This one is due in August too so was hoping to get something going where I am at home. I think for the fairs to work I would have to be doing it regularly to get my name out there and the repeat business.

I'll keep thinking and see what I come up with.

Thanks again.

I was talking to a SAHM at toddler group last week who said she does Avon. Unfortunately she only gets about £40 a fortnight from it (depends on how many people you can get on your books)

What about local childminding - I'm thinking specifically school age so you get the days with your lo but do a school drop off/pick up?

Thanks for suggestion. I think there are age group limits for numbers and by Aug I will have 4 age 7 and under so that could be something I can look at when mine bit older.

Are you a childminder? Am I right in thinking there are age limits on how many kids you can look after?

Thanks.

I'm not a childminder but you are right about limits on age numbers and also space. It's easier when they get to school. I'm sure it's no more than 1 baby under 1. No more than 3 under 5 and a max of 6 under 8 in total (including your own).

I'm sure there are websites which detail the ins and outs.

Even with 4 of your own you could still take two for school drop off and pick ups. I'm not sure how much you'd get for that but I'd pay at least £30-40 per child per 5-day week for that?

Im trying to find things to do from home also that are obviously legal whilst im on maternity pay.
I do surveys but im yetting about £10 a month so its certainly not an income, my plan is to save this for xmas. Im also selling bits and bobs on ebay but once again certainly not a business.

my friend does nails and her initial setup cost ££500 and she has made £700 in 3 months and she just does that from 6pm onwards as she also has a full time job. Another friend does spray tans and makes an ok 2nd wage doing that.
unfortunately I am not good at anything beauty wise so I wouldnt even try

I am a consultant with Scentsy wickless who launched in the UK in 2011 and Ireland in 2012 and I have built a business ground up that now its allowed me to stay home full time and bring up our boys as I wanted without spending tons on any childcare.

I love love what I do..they are sending me to Greece for a week all paid in May :happydance: (this type of thing never happened to me ever) and Mexico in January :happydance:

I think rule one is love what you do...thats the hardest part of the battle done then.

Any questions shout.

Oh and the fact I can hop out of bed in pj's and down to work switching kettle on as I go is bliss....pure bliss .

I agree with cybermum - loving what you do is really important if you want it to be a pleasant experience, and I think when you're working from home it's more important that you enjoy your job as it can overlap with your home life so much. It's different if you hate a job in an office somewhere, you can come home and forget it, but when your office is your home there's less chance to escape even if you segregate your time and workspace.

What I do is a combination of what I'm good at (very boring, but general admin, social media, writing) and what I enjoy (cloth nappies!) so it works well for me. OP is there something you are particularly good at? If it's jewellery, do you have any skills that could make an interesting way to branch out? For example, if you are good at teaching people things you could look at running some local classes or put together kits for people to buy to make their own jewellery. I have no idea if those ideas are already being done a lot (probably are!) but you know the area so maybe you can come up with something a bit different.

I do Mystery Shopping - Its not really a proper income but saves money on quite a lot of things I'd buy anyway. Over the last year I've 'mystery shopped' petrol stations getting £10 of petrol refunded, Pizza delivery restaurants, a well known burger chain, Supermarkets and the best... a night in a B&B with dinner & breakfast all paid for!

Best site to sign up with is www.gapbuster.com

I took on a second job in November last year as a distributor of Juice Plus.

Similar to Arbonne in a way, it's a supplement which comes in a variety of forms, is made using organic fruit, veg and berries, is gluten free, 30 gold standard studies and many many health benefits.

You can earn full time wages with part tine hours if you really go for it. My mentor sold her successful beauty salon of 13 years as she's making more from juice plus.

I'm not there yet but my aim is to build a strong enough customer base to be able to choose whether I return to work or make JP my main job xx

I am a medical rep. I currently drive to appointments but I am switching to work 100% from home in June.

I used to do Avon for 9 months, but done it in previous years too during pregnancy. I made £50-120 a time which is every 3 weeks with 7 territorial customers and 8 family/friends. It became a bit of a chore having to go out and collect books every 4 days. Now I've moved I use somebody else as my rep.

Now for my money, I design logos for companies which I never even planned to do. But I get anything from £20 onwards per design at my own rates.

Set up your own little boutique on eBay of your belongings?

Stalking, id love to work from home so i can be with my little boy all the time. i just have no idea what i could do!! Avon hardly ever makes you money, especially not in my shoes when i know many people who already do it!! plus you can also spend more than you make.
I also arent that good at baking/decorating, id like to think i am, but im not. There is a bit of money to be made in the cake making business, i know a girl who does it, i dont know if she claims benefits too and then just tells them if and what she earns a week/fortnight and they deduct her benefits according.. i could be wrong though!!
i also know people who do beauty from home, but again this can be unpredictable!!

the rest of home jobs include being paid from commission which is crap!! hope you find something you like!!

If she's making a business out of it .ie promoting herself online/elsewhere then she should be self employed on which you can get JSA contribution based (not income based) to help carry the business on and still have some left over to live off.

Avon is supposedly self-employed too.

I work with FM Cosmetic which is good - fm sell a wide range of products from perfume and make up to cleaning products, there are no minimum orders and no monthly deadlines so if you dont make a order one month its no issue, all the catalogs are online for you to send the links to people but there is also the option to buy them but again this isnt a must, there is also a starter kit option but again you dont have to, the only time you will need a kit is if you want to build a team like me, postage is £6 however big the order is. There is a chance to earn 33% commission but you also earn money without commission for example a bottle of perfume is 17.99 which is what the customer pays you but as you are a distrubtor you only pay 14.99 so you keep the difference x x

if anyone want to join pm me and i will recruit you :)

I work outside the home, but I've just done a hefty order with a lady who does fingerprint jewellery, she does all sorts though, hand prints, drawings, paw prints, shrunk into silver into a variety of forms of jewellery. She is always posting what orders she's working on and she has loooooads, she must be making a mint. She will be well established now, but maybe it could be a way of expanding what you do, I find anything personalised is a big seller. I've just put myself on the waiting list for a lady who makes teddy bears out of your babies old clothes, it's 6 months long x
