Hi everyone,

Just wondering if it's normal for the umbilical cord stump to smell quite strong? I don't remember my dd's smelling this strong as my ds's is. Obviously it is rotting flesh essentially so I'm not too worried and the MW saw it today and didn't say anything was wrong. There's no signs of infection on it it's just quite a strong smell! Can't wait for it to fall off!!

DD's was exactly the same but was okay. Just keep on top of cleaning it regularly and making sure you dry it and it should still be alright :)

Yeah my youngest babys absolutely STUNK it was embarrassing. I had to explain the stink to visitors who came n held her! MW and HV both said it was fine so long as the skin round it didnt look infected/red. Itll fall off soon. I did a bit of "coaxing" i.e washing it a LOT in the hope it would come off as i washed.. and it did

Thanks ladies, it really stinks it's horrible!! But I guess as long as it looks fine and not infected it's ok. Just hope it's not long til it falls off!!

Sophie's smelled dreadful! Like rotting flesh and sort of eggy.

Yeah it's definately a rotting flesh smell minties bleurgh! They cut it really short so the clamp is really close to his belly meaning we can't really clean it up much either. MW is out to us again Saturday anyway so I'll get her to check it's ok but in the meantime I guess I'll just have to try and ignore the smell yuk!

Can you get her to take the clamp off? I chopped Sophies one off (still have it with a bit of the stump, yuck I know!) but they took Thomas's clip off on day 3 or 4. It kept getting snagged on her clothes so I had enough and got the scissors out.

It fell off last night woohoo! Smell is gone and Logans belly button looks fine. It was a little gubky at first but looks ok now. And I can get MW to check it today, phew!

Phew! My sons fell off in a night time nappy change on day five but I remember it smelling horrid before then...anyone who came round I told about it so they didnt think I was ignoring his nappy or something!

Congrats on your little boy, bailey! I didn't notice any smell with either of my two LO's cords, although they grossed me out so much DH did the nappies until they fell off! The midwife even had to clean the dried up blood out of DD's as I just couldn't!

Thanks mrs hm! He finally arrived lol! Thankfully it fell off yesterday. I never noticed a smell with dd's but ds's really did stink so thank god it's gone lol!

I'm not stalking you, but I replied on your announcement thread too lol!
