I'm reading up on baby clothes, and found an article on WebMD which said this:

Undershirts: 4-6, short- or long-sleeved

Undershirts that snap or tie on the side are easier to put on a small baby than those that pull over the head. Undershirts are also better than onesies until your baby's umbilical cord falls off.

Have you found this to be true? Did you use undershirts (even if it was cold when your baby was born) instead of onesies at first?

No never, I think they'd be extremely irritating underneath a onesie because they'd ride up the baby's back. I always used a vest with poppers at the bottom rather than the vests without the poppers underneath a sleepsuit

Used onesies from day 1 (well, first time he wore more than a diaper) in the NICU. No issue with umbilical cord. Hate shirts, they ride up. He had no problem with stuff going over his head, didn't love it, but didn't hurt him.

Noo, they are so annoying. Even on an older baby I use things that popper between the legs.

Honestly for those first few weeks we just kept Evelyn in a diaper and then swaddled in a blanket. If we went out we put her in several different types of outfits (dresses, pants/shirts, onesies), and I think they were all about the same level of difficulty to get on her. The hospital did give us a shirt/vest type thing that tied closed, and it was easier to get on her, but we didn't use it after we got her home.

I used onesies from day 1, and never had a problem with the umbilical cord. Undershirts tend to ride up and are so annoying, even now. Also, onesies hold the diaper on and if you have a poo explosion, they many times keep it from getting on the outfit or sleeper. Def a fan of onesies here.

At the hospital the girls were born at they used those undershirts with ties. Honestly, I found them a pain. What I love for newborns are side button onesies like these:

H&M sells them.

Yep! These are fantastic. Hard to find in the US though. I had 2 and used them almost every day. WAY easier to get on when they are tiny.

Vest with poppers at the crotch and all-in-one sleepsuits here. I don't dress in "normal" clothes till after 3 months. Had no issue with umbilical cord.

I used onsies and did not have a problem with his cord. He was born during a heat wave and we don't have AC. So he was in just a diaper 90% of the time.

I like having something that pops open on the side , like the onesies a pp posted, or even a side popping shirt with some pants, for pediatrician visits & stuff. At least my pediatrician's office is so cold, and it's nice to have something that I can take off when need be, but easily put back on. Other than that, nope!

My 12 month old is still in the ones with poppers between the legs. Anything else rides up when you pick baby up and it must be so uncomfortable.

I thought the whole point of baby wearing anything under was to stop any friction? Wouldn't an undershirt that doesn't pop at the bottom cause more friction on the back?

I only use proper snapping ones at the bottom. I thought OH would be very nervous putting the romper over Nathan's head as a newborn since they are so fragile but Nathan was never a delicate baby. I had bought some of those with the snaps on the side but we ended up getting annoyed with all the extra snaps :haha: We still use them but we just unsnap the bottom ones and put them over his head like a regular one.

Anyway, my kiddo absolutely loves spending his days in just his romper so that's what works best for us. I often use just a long sleeve romper as a shirt anyway, not putting anything over it I mean, with overalls or a sleeping bag.

We used onesies. Never had an issue with it. We were careful putting them on.
