Understanding Sperm test results. Help please!!

Hi,

We have just got back from our Doctor's appointment. He said my DH's sperm analysis results were ok and he need not repeat the test. I asked for a print-out of the results and the morphology percentage has me really concerned. I cannot see how our doctor can say that it is a normal figure.

Density of morphologically normal and motile sperm 3%

3%???? Surely there is cause for concern here???

The other results were:

Sperm density 36 million/ml
total sperm count 306 million
forward progression 80%
ph 8.2
sample volume 8.5ml
semi viscous, cloudy white.

Can anyone tell me anything about these results please?? xx

Hey hun - 3% is low - We were told 30% morphology and motility of 50%. Having said that, your hubby has a very high count.

What did they suggest re possible ways to improve the motility?

DH is on Wellmans tablets, 1000mg of vit c and Maca (herbal). He also cut down on alcohol, lost a bit of weight and improved his diet which showed his motility and morphology improve - 15% to 55%.

Did they suggest a second SA in 3 months time?xx

Thanks for answering.
That is just it. The Dr said the results were ok and he need not repeat it. Why could he not see that it was a low result? I'm thinking he must have no idea what he is talking about. I would like a second opinion actually. Might get DH in to see another gp from the practice.
It is good to know that the figures can be improved though. xx

They say 20million per ml is 'normal' and 2.5ml is also classed as normal so your DH is way above that on both - i'm crap at maths but work out the 'total' count from the 3% 'good' sperm and that'll give you a rough idea of what is left??

Have you been ttc for long?

We are approaching a year ttc. The first couple were NTNP but properly trying since around Easter time. We already have 3 children aged 15,11 and 6 but are having problems this time around (age I guess). My cd21 tests came back as low progesterone (24) so I have to repeat that this time, but cd3 tests were all "good".

Well i hope you get some response soon - it sounds like they could do with assessing the bigger picture and don't let them fob you off just because you have children already

Hi there,

My hubbie has been told that he has 6% normal morphology/forms which we were told is a low but the GP didn't seem concerned . I, however, am concerned because we're up to 16 months TTC and it's tough going. We did some reading around however and it seems that 14% is 'normal' so the 6% doesn't seem quite so bad.

Having said that, anything that isn't normal is difficult to deal with so I feel for you.

Thank you Leila Fae. I know knowledge is power but all these figures and percentages just cause added stress when we realise we are not within the realms of "normal".

Ahh thanks MrPhyema, Yep IVF next year and get our dates next week so hoping it's not too long. Still hoping it can happen naturally but had better hurry up and getting cracking as i want 4 babies xx

Normal values -
volume at least 2ml
count = 20million per ml (so they are looking for at least 40million sperm in total per ejaculat)
morphology > 14% which from the total count (20million) would be 5.6 million sperm per ejaculate.

Your husbands results :
volume = 8.5ml (which is quadruple the amount they are looking for)
count = 306 million (that equals 36millon sperm per ml.. wow thats a lot compared to the normal of 20million )
morphology = 3% ( that equals 9.18 million sperm per ejaculate which is almost double the normal amount of 5.6 million sperm per ejaculate)


this is quite hard to explain but to me it looks like your husband has super sperm which is why there is no need to repeat the test...

hi, frm ur results 80%progression is good, 80% of all his sperm is swimming forward an can reach ur egg...if its ur results that are low there mayb options like clomid or other fertility drugs, u would havv more eggs ready to b fertilized...my db progression was 9% after 5days no bd, an only 1ml sample...so our dr has refered him to a specilist...i think ur results are good, an you hav a very good chance of concieving,, mayb with a little medical heelp it will happen quicker. Just tryin to reasure you, as im sure if it was low like ours u to wud b refrerd. Good luck x

thank you, we had our male ferlility specilist appointment on 30th, an although my db already gave 2 x samples to my dr, he wants another 2...my db is 37+no children 4 either of us, ttc 25mths well 26 this mnth....an we hav to keep waiting, its so annoying an the hsptl my db has to go is far away an he has 6 shedualed apps btwn now an end of feb...!! I really thought they mite hav offered us a plan of action straight away...*sighs* but we are getting closer...woop woop x x
