My DS2 is what I would call a pretty grumpy baby.. To the point if he spends 5-10 mins on the playmat actually playing we are chuffed.
Was wondering those with babies that werent often content for long etc when things improved and what are they like as 1-2 year olds?

How old is your baby? My daughter really wasn't content to be put down at all, ever, alone until closer to 4 months. She slept every nap on me (actually until she was 8 months) and we co-slept at night, and she just needed to be held all the time. It's not being unsettled. It's just being a baby. Some need to be in close contact with their parents rather than just being 'cot babies' (you know, the kind that just lay in a carry cot all day and don't fuss if they aren't held). But from around maybe 3, probably more like 4 months, my daughter would go down on her playmat, like you said, for a few minutes at a time. By about 6 months, she was much happier to be on the floor for longer, but she still wanted me in the room near her. She's 27 months now and very outgoing and confident and social. I think because we helped her to feel secure when she was little by holding her as much as she needed and not forcing her to do anything that didn't feel right.

Depends - all babies are different obviously. Is your baby happy to just be held? Eg. can you be sitting down with him or do you need to be standing up and moving around or bouncing/rocking for him to be happy?
