Hi,

We like very unusual names, and have a very long girls name list! Unfortunately there are only a few we both like!

What do you think of the name Persephone (pronounced Per-seph-onie)?

If we do go with that name, thinking of changing the spelling slightly to Persephonie - just so people don't find it too hard to pronounce the first time.

btw the name is from greek mythology.

Hhmmm... I think it's a name that could grow on me...

I like your alternative spelling, helps make it easier to figure out pronounciation...

I love your son's name... Jenson is so cute!

I love greek mythological names...I am not sure about this one because the pronounciation in English (the ending sounds like "phony")..also because she was goddess of the underworld..but otherwise I think it's a great idea to touch unused mythological names :) What nickname would you use? I think it could be cute with a short, simple mn..Good luck!!

Thanks girls.

OH really likes it, which I'm very surprised about! Just trying to convince him to alter the spelling slightly, just so that its pronounced correctly to people who've never heard of it.

Thinking of calling her 'Sephy' for a nn, or was toying with Poppy as a middle name (still a long way of deciding middle names!) and thought Percy-pops was quite sweet! lol!

While it's true that she was the Goddess of the Underworld, you have to remember that the role of ruling the underworld wasn't looked upon as a bad thing or as Hell. It was just as important and respected as ruling the seas.
Also, I like the idea of naming her after Persephone because if you've ever read the story of how the seasons were created it shows how strong her bond with her mother was. It was actually really touching. (I took a World Myths & Legends class this semester and couldn't help but put my knowledge to good use )

Not keen, my daughter has a name people have trouble pronouncing and it gets rather annoying!!! Like Poppy

I like it - there was a girl at school and we called her Percy for short x

Im personally not too keen on it, its a bit long for me

but like the others said it sounds like one that could grow on me :)

Yea I did think about the 4 syllables - thinking it maybe too long, but then you get names like Olivia, Elizabeth, Victoria, Amelia, etc and they don't seem too long.

coccyx; what is you're daughters name out of interest?

I'm sorry I don't like it, I think your daughter would get fed up of having to spell it our for people constantly especially when she is older dealing with banks etc. I know it sounds like a minor thing but having had a difficult long surname pre-marriage I know just how irritating it can be on a daily basis. Also, I think it would get shortened to Percy or Phony at school which aren't too flattering. There are some other lovely names in Greek mythology - what about Aurora? Sorry I feel mean saying I don't like it but just trying to be honest x

You're quite right ;) It's just that for most people in the western world it probably doesn't bring up positive associations I guess and it could be something that she gets teased about..but then again kids can and will find weaknesses in any and all names so that shouldn't be good enough reason to keep one away from a name they like!!!! :)

We chose Atlas for our son (before Anne Heche did) and he is 2.
You know that is also from Greek mythology. It ended up being very fitting for our boy. My friend has a buddy names Casino, yes that's quite odd but it goes with his offbeat personality and helps set him apart in his artistic career.
The one thing about unique names is many times it can be used as an advantage later. If I were to scan resumes and saw a name on one that was unique I would remember it more than one that is more common. I have an extremely common name and there's nothing wrong with that either! I love a good strong traditional name as well!! In these days it seems traditional names can be quite refreshing too!
Kids tease other kids, that's what they do. If it's not over a name it will be over clothes, etc. I wouldn't let ANYONE sway your opinion. A name will stick out to you and when it does go for the ride.

I LOVE Persephone! It's definitely on my list.
Persephone Alice
Persephone Shay
Persephone Iris
Persephone Anais
Persephone Eden
Persephone Emerald
Persephone Luella

I love Persephone, although I do love Greek names in general. Also, Percy is such a cute nickname (as well as Percy pops lol)

 I like it! And I think Percy-Pops is fab!

I'm not a fan sorry, I do like the style and uniqueness though.

I give you props for uniqueness but I'm don't fancy it...I'd feel sorry for her when she's learning to spell her name...mines Stephanie and it was long enough, then to add all the mispronunciations she'll get her entire life...I would sit on it for a while

i like it and i do agree on the change of spelling for ease of pronunciation as i know alot of people would say 'phone' and not 'phonie'.

and i love percy pop! so cute. and she would be one of very very very few people in the uk called persephonie. xx

It wasn't to my taste really, but after seeing all of the suggestions its growing on me ;) and I like the idea of going for a unique name :)

The only person I have known with this name is very posh! It's very unusual, personally I'm not too keen though I do love unusual names so if you like it I would go for it. I would personally keep the traditional spelling as I would have thought most people would know how to pronounce it (but perhaps my expectations of people are too high!) in the same way as being able to say Hermione.
