I'm going to register Charlie today, and we've last minute decided to use both our last names linked. Originally I just wanted my last name because we aren't married, and then both of us take his when we are married.

OH said he didn't mind if I dropped his part of the name just as long as it was on the birth certificate.

So who's name goes where so his name is dropped in every day use?

Normally the second name is the one that gets dropped I think, as in if your name was John Smith-Brown most people would call you John Smith.

different people do it different ways, e.g Jake Luke-smith could become Jake Smith or Jake Luke.. However i would use it as Jake Smith..

But i use kyles like this; his full name Kyle Dylan Wailes Newson but i drop the Wailes as his second middle name lol

Can you use both though? Like when he is at school?
My LO is James Declin Daly-Arnett and if me and my OH ever get married we want to all be Daly-Arnetts....

It depends what one your LO prefers. My cus drops the last bit cos its longer and no one can spell it yet a lad i went to school with dropped the first bit.

I know a few people with double-barrelled surnames and if they do use, or get called by, a shortened version it always seems to be the first of the names that gets dropped.

You can drop either, but remember that on all legal documents / school etc it will still be double barrelled unless you go through deed poll to change it xxxx

Thanks guys, think ill go with my name first and then his last :)

id do it the other way round mines doble barrled and everyone always uses the last bit which is my mum and dads last name people always think the 1st is a middle name

i would of liked to have double barreled last name with my LO but it'd be far too long winded

Barry Robert Ramsden-Bourbon
or
Barry Robert Bourbon-Ramsden

I worked with someone whose name is Barbara Dugard-Craig and she gets called Barbara Craig quite often.... I assume the first one gets dropped as though it were a middle name.

I have a double barreled surname and it is the last one that got dropped. It actually didnt get dropped until I was in secondary school though! I suppose its just whatever one you prefer. Another girl in my class also had a double barrel name but she dropped the first surname as the first one was 'Benjamin' and people used to ask her why she had a boys middle name lol!

I have a double barrelled surname but mainly use the last part x
