Hi everybody! I take .5mg of Xanax at night to help me sleep. Some providers have advised against that since it's a dangerous med, and others, including my infertility doc says it's ok until I achieve pregnancy then I have to let it go. I'm still kinda worried about taking it while TTC, but I'm never gonna get pregnant if I don't sleep and have anxiety. Have any of you ever taken a dangerous med while TTC and everything turned out ok? I think half my problem is anxiety!

Thanks!!!!!!

I have bipolar affective disorder and still take my medication (Venlafaxine and Quetiapine) and will probably do so throughout pregnancy when the time comes. This is after a lot of thinking, research and discussions with my DH and psychiatrist. We've weighed the risks of taking the medication against the risks of me becoming ill whilst pregnant and decided that an episode would be more dangerous for our unborn child than the medication.

I also have diazepam which I use as a prn. This is known to cause neural tube defects so I'll only use it if I'm absolutely desperate AND can be sure I'm not pregnant e.g. during or just after AF. This has been difficult at times but again it's about weighing risks against benefits and the risks of this medication just aren't worth taking.

What I'm saying is you need to do your research, speak to your doctors and your partner (which it sounds like you have) and weigh the risks against the benefits. Only you can decide. Whatever choice you makes, don't feel guilty, you are doing the best for you and your future child.

I recommend a book called 'Pregnant on Prozac' which discusses the issues faced by women with psychiatric conditions and their treatments during pregnancy. Best of luck!
