I'm in the very early stages of pregnancy and have just made contact with my local independant midwife. My husband and i really like the idea of having the consistancy of the same professional and im very very scared of hospitals so i dont think that would be the best place for me to have the best chance of a positive birth.

Ive posted this message in the first trimester forum and got no response. I figured afew people here may have had home births etc. I was wondering if anyone has used an independant midwife or is considering using one and what thier experience of it was.

I could also do with a good list of questions to ask as i have no idea what i need to know or find out.

Any help grately appreciated

i had an independant midwife by luck in my last delivery the hospital were over stretched and had to call her in. i had an awful time up until i got her. i was listened too and cared for in an amazing way. and if i ever had another baby id beg burrow and steal to have one again.

this is who delivered my baby, read her blog xx

also check out the one mother one midwife campaign

thanks so much for the info....

I have my first appointment with her on the 8th of aug and i want to make sure im well prepared so i get all my questions answered.

As this is first time round its hard to know what i dont know because i dont know it :dohh:

I figure second prengnacies are probably easier that way because you know what you want and what to ask for

fingers crossed bean holds on and that i like this lady - it would be a big releif!!

I had supportive NHS MWs for my home birth (first baby) and felt so relieved that I didn't have to fight the system to get what I wanted. BUT, on the day, the MW who attended wasn't very experienced and wasn't able to handle the complications that came up very confidently, which is ultimately why we ended up transferring and eventually having a c/s.

Next time there is no way I am leaving things to the luck of the draw of who is on duty. My proviso for even having another baby in the future is that we hire an IM, I wouldn't do it any other way, especially as I will be having an HBAC, so I can't expect the same enthusiasm for my plans from the NHS.

You've already been given lots of helpful links, but I would also suggest joining the homebirth yahoo group for loads of expert advice and support.

I had a successful first baby home birth with the NHS. They're very supportive of them here but I was always aware of the boxes that needed ticking in order for me to qualify for one and also staffing issues. If I'd had the money I'd definitely have gone independent from as early as possible.

Two of my friends, both in their early 40s and both first-time mums, used an independent midwife for home birth and would swear that it's the only way forward. I see you're in located in the Midlands. If you're near Northamptonshire or surrounds, then I can give you the details of the midwife they used. I know her through them and she's lovely. PM me if you want more info. Good luck.

I really want to try a home birth for my next one, though i'm kinda concerned about how far we are from the nearest hospital in case anything does go wrong.

Hi again, just catching up with my BnB posts - the midwife I know in Northamptonshire is actually on the Northants/Warks border so might be closer to you than you think. I'm not trying to force her on to you though! Just thought I'd mention it in case you want more info.

my midwives are certified nurse midwives who run their own independent practice here in my town. i have been meeting with them for 4 months now, and they take many many many different kinds of insurances. they will deliver my baby in my home as per my request, but they also offered the option of a birthing center. i have been researching this subject pretty hardcore since i decided that this was the obvious way to go for me, and it seems like more and more independent midwives are accepting different insurances and offer a sliding scale of payment options!!!!!!!!!
