Using longterm disability for pregnancy?

I'm reasonably sure that my workplace is going to let me go next week; they consider any change of my job to be too much to handle for my pregnancy. My husband makes only $13 per hour. We have no insurance. I doubt I'll get a job with benefits immediately while pregnant. I want to avoid government assistance. Now a coworker who knows what's happening is encouraging me to go on longterm disability first before they can fire me. It's not what I really want, but if it's the only alternative... Does anyone know anything about this?

Pregnancy itself is not a disability unless something is affecting your health or the baby's health. I was put on short term disability the week before I delivered because my blood pressure spiked. It took documentation from my doctor for my company to approve me going on STD. It takes a lot more to get long term disability. You might want to check with your local employment offices to see if your job can fire you for your pregnancy. Hope it works out for you. :hugs:

Him, I hadn't considered talking to the employment offices to see how legal the firing is. Thanks! I'm pretty dubious about the disability thing anyway, seems unemployment would be the better way to go. Seems more honest for this.

I know this was a few months ago, but they can not fire you for being pregnant...that's illegal. I hope you checked into that. I'm pretty sure long term disability insurance is something you have to already have and be paying into either yourself or your employer. And like they said above, you have to have a doctor's approval to take a leave under disability. Anyway, I hope you figured it all out!
