Hi,
So here's my birth story. Beware veeeery long!!
I'm so very grateful to God that everything went as smoothly as it did.
So my first baby was born vaginally in 2010 weighing 2.98kg, after just 3 hours of labour following an induction.
The induction necessitated continuous foetal monitoring and limited my mobility.
Needless to say that I hated the entire process and was shocked by the fact that the birth resulted in a 3rd degree tear!
I later found out that the birth was classed as a shoulder dystocia case!!! This was never discussed with me!..... whole other story.
So when I found out I was pregnant a second time, I was nervous as to what kind of birth to go for.
I researched just about everything available and came up with a plan I felt comfortable with, but was still very anxious...in tears most nights going back and forth from my decision and arguing with my husband.
I decided to go for another vaginal birth:
1)following ultrasounds at 37 and 39 weeks to check size of baby ..anything larger than my first then CS.
2)using an epi-no to strengthen my pelvic floor and stretch my perineum...really don't want double incontinence!!!!
3)stay as mobile as possible during labour and defo labour OFF MY BACK!!
4) no induction!!
5) no going past 10 days overdue as with first baby, set elective CS date for after this
After 4 sweeps, plenty of bloody show and not even a twinge at 40+6 weeks I was getting fed up, and saw my vaginal birth going out the window!
Then finally on the day before my planned section date, I started getting contractions.
I went to the hospital the day after on the 18th and what do you know? they want to monitor the baby....I ask her how long for and she tells me until she's happy!! I ask if she could attach it to the babys head and I get told could you just let me do what I have to do (starting to think this is the same pleasant midwife I had last time that).
Having contractions whilst attached to that machine is quite probably the most uncomfortable thing ever.
So she checks me and Im 5-6cm dilated, I warn her that I tend to go very quickly and would like to get moved on soon.....falls on deaf ears.
Eventually after 8 tries of finding a vein to fit precautionarily for a potential blood transfusion, (apparently I had a haemorrhage last time!!! News to me!!) I managed to get the Dr to detach me from the foetal monitor.
Cue midwife coming back to attach me whilst tutting, baby by the way was fine!!! So no need for monitoring.
Thank God Dr was there and insisted I get moved.
I start getting strong urges to push and get moved to labour ward. Im so far gone that I dont even bother with trousers or shoes!!! Could care less so wrap a sheet round my bottom half.
More prodding around for vein, actually need gas and air for this as they eventually fit it into an unusual vein!!!!
So new midwife seems nice enough but after I tell her that Id like to be as mobile as possible for birth to prevent SD she tells me that positioning makes no difference to chances of SD..... why employ the Mcroberts procedure to resolve it then? Didnt have enough energy to fight this so just lay there trying not to panic.
Eventually she asks me if Id like to move, with relief I go on all fours on the bed and the baby was born 10 minutes later, no SD !! no CS no tears!! Not even a graze!
I couldnt believe I hadnt torn I asked her to check again. She laughed and said defo nothing.
Healthy baby, happy mummy.
I am so grateful the labour went so well.
Still on cloud 9 2 weeks later.
