I just had my 20 week anatomy scan and am now high risk. Not only do I have two complete placentas (one on each side of my uterus), but the umbilical cord goes from the baby, up to my fundus, then splits into two, and goes into EACH placenta.

The high risk doctor says she has never seen anything quite like this. She says im at an increased risk of having a blood clot int he umbilical cord, the baby not growing properly or having a stillborn due to rupture of the umbilical cord. Im terrified honestly.

She says its rare, so im curious if anyone out there has anything similiar going on. After some quick research and hearing how labor can cause the umbilical cord to rupture, I think im going to request them to go ahead and schedule a c-section, esp. since she hinted that I probably would have one as they wont let me go up to my due date.

I have never heard of this either. Very special baby you've got in there! Good luck and I. Hope you have a good and healthy pregnancy and delovery.

Thank you so much.

Ive been trying to do as much research as possible tonight, and it looks like the exact terms for what I have is a double placenta with a bifurcated umbilical cord on top of the velamentous cord insertion. I cant find much on the bifurcated umbilical cord, but i did find one article about a case like mine with the cord splitting in two and going to two placentas without a twin being present, however, i dont have access to it, so im trying to find someone who does.

Im just hoping and praying everything turns out ok and plan on requesting a c-section to ensure LO is born in time so we dont risk possible rupture of the cords if I went into labor on my own.

I assume it's a research report that you found? What is the title of it and I'll se if i can access it through my uni databases *hugs*

well I caved in and just paid the money to be able to access the article. $32 later, at least I know this lady with the one case like mine, did infact deliver a healthy baby boy at 37 weeks. :happydance:

Oh hun! :( I just signed on and was goin to email it to you :) PM me your email address and i"ll see what else I can find and send to you from the uni databases :)
