hi all,

I have a very high cholesterol (9.2) for which i usually take statins (statins brought it down to about 5).

I was told to come off statins when we were TTC. and so the last blood test i had it had gone back up to 7.2. I guess by now it has sot up and is higher.

the midwife doesnt think there should be any problems (I have normal BP)but she is sending me to a special clinic to make sure.

I have read that it can cause blood clots and pre-eclampsia though.

Am wondering if anyone here knows how it could affect me/the baby ???

sos dont know anything about your condition but would like to wish you the best..

I've got hereditary (sp!) high cholesterol, I think the highest it's been is about 8.4mmol and it was about 7.3 last time it was checked. I'm 26, and before pregnancy I was at the higher end of a normal BMI (24 ish)
I'm seen yearly by a special consultant who has agreed to let me try and manage with diet and exercise, as I don't like the thought of being on statins for the rest of my life and there is evidence to suggest that women have a natural protection against heart problems before the menopause anyway (oestrogen I think)
I had an appointment with the consultant literally a few days after my BFP - he said that cholesterol naturally increases by quite a bit in pregnancy and there was no point in trying to actively reduce my cholesterol levels. He advised me to just carry on eating healthily and exercising as normal (which I admit to NOT doing )
I haven't had any real problems in this pregnancy, BP has risen a little bit but nothing that needs to be worried about. No one has mentioned any other complications to me - so I'd say - don't worry about it. Just try and keep a high uptake of fruit, veg, oats etc.

thanks CocoaOne, appreciate the experiences. I was told diet and excercise will only bring it down by .5 or by 1. so on the basis of that I eat a balanced diet (lots of fruit and veg- but still eat cakes and red meat!!!)I am probably a little overweight as i dont do any excerise either. But i guess now is not the time to start a new routine!! (any old excuse!).

Glad to hear its nto affected you in your pregnancy, hopefully all will be ok with mine too! hope all goes well for you and your LO
