Where do I start?! I'm a bit late in writing this, I had my gorgeous girl just over 3 weeks ago but haven't had a chance to write a birth story yet. But I really wanted too so I'm gonna share it now....
So on May 24th at 3.30am I woke with a pop and a trickle down below and thought crap I need to get to the toilet! So, I ran to the loo and I really did need a wee, so I just thought Id had a really full bladder and maybe weed myself a bit, but just in case I'd put a pad on. I then got back in bed but couldn't sleep umming and ahhing weather it could be my waters as I was 39+3 at that point. I sat up playing solitaire on my phone and could feel a lot of trickles happening but was still convincing myself that it was nothing. At half 7, my OH's alarm went off and he woke up for work. I told him what had happened and he got all excited and phoned his mum to ask what to do. She told us to phone the hospital, so I did. I explained what had happened and they told me to come in for a check as it sounded like my waters had broken. After this I had no doubt my waters had gone because I stood up and soaked my pj's
and it would not stop!
So at half 11 I went in and the midwife checked me over, checked the pad I had been wearing and confirmed my waters had gone. She then told me I would need to be induced the next day if labour didn't start naturally in the next 24 hours. I was hoping it would because I didn't want to be induced but unfortunately nothing happened so on Friday 25th may I went in to be induced.*
Induction... Well I knew it wasn't going to be fun but it was kinda boring. A midwife explained that as my waters had gone she would give me a pessary and if that hadn't started contractions, in 6 hours she would give me another one. So at 2.00pm she inserted the pessary (my first vaginal examination, was not fun, but didn't actually hurt as much as I thought it would) and I was put on a monitor to check baby's heartbeat. Hours went by and nothing, but baby's heart rate was dipping every time I had a contraction (which I couldn't even feel at this stage). Then it got to 6 o clock and my OH had to leave because of visiting times. I was due to be given another pessary but a new midwife came on duty and was concerned about baby's heart rate dipping so said she was moving me to the labour ward. This upset me as I had wanted to go to the birth unit and have a water birth. I rang OH and told him to come back and he had just got home, so had to come all the way back.
When I was on labour ward I had yet another midwife look after me, and I was put on a drip to kick start labour. One midwife tried putting the drip in my left hand but couldn't find the vein so another finally put one in my right hand. I never realised that would be so painful! Ouch! My OH gets there with his mum and it's about 9pm at this point. I start to get slow contractions but nothing major. Then the dosage is turned up on the drip and they start to become painful. A doctor comes in and offers me an epidural straight away, and I'm a wimp so I gladly accept. I'm examined again and I am only 1 cm but they give me the Epi anyway!! The doctor comes to do it and all I remember is sweating buckets because it was soooo hot out. I kept moving cos I could feel the needle but he did it in the end.*
At this point it all gets a bit hazy and the hours blur in to one and I only remember bits and bobs. But il try my best. So in the end I get given 5 bags of syntonocin, and am being given fluids too to keep me hydrated. I keep getting the epidural topped up every couple of hours because it only ended up working on one half of my body so I could still feel pain in my left side! I must have had about 12 top ups by the time it was over! I couldn't feel my legs so OH had to keep moving me up the bed. I couldn't move around as I was on the monitor, had an Epi and catheter in, and was stuck to a drip too. I also kept being sick every time the epi was topped up but i didnt care as id rather be sick than have the pain. I was given anti sickness injections but they didnt work. They attached a clip to bubbas head so they can monitor her better. The baby's heart rate was still dropping every time I had a contraction so the midwife consulted the doctor who said to monitor me for 4 hours and if it was still happening I'd have a c section. Well the four hours come around and I've geared myself up for surgery, only to be told they will monitor me for another few hours to see if it changes. Then I get told I most prob won't have a c sec. They examine me four hours later and im still only one cm so they change there mind again and say to do a c sec , but then the babys heart rate is ok for a while so they once again rule it out! At this point I am shattered, haven't had any sleep and just want something to happen! They up the dosage of the drip and fianlly a couple hours later I get to 6cm and then before I know it I'm at 10cm!*
Another midwife is now on duty and she says that it's best not to give me a top up of the Epi as il be pushing very soon and I will need to feel something to know if I'm pushing right. I reluctantly agree and can feel baby moving lower and tell them I think it's time. She examines me and can feel the head! My OH's sister comes in to support OH. They put my legs in stirrups which is no fun but had to be done and I begin to push at around 2pm on Saturday 26th may....I have 4 midwives, a doctor, my OH and his sister in the room all telling me to push and I just feel like severely hurting them all! I think I'm pushing right but the midwife says sometimes I am and sometimes I'm not. It's the worst pain but I keep going. I've been told that at one point I tell a midwife to f*** off
the doctor is all for using forceps but I say no. Then he wants to give me an episiotomy but I refuse. At this point they keep telling me I need to push better or they will have to cut me. I remember that I was pushing nearly all the time cos I didn't know when I was having a contraction as the pain was constant, so that porbs wore me out more. I'm screaming over and over that I can't do it and crying my eyes out. The midwife tries giving me gas and air but I keep refusing it as she's trying to push it into my mouth! After numerous times of refusing being cut, they tell me the baby's is now in distress and they really need to cut me to get LO out, so I agree. She gives me the local anesthetic for it and I don't remember this but supposedly doc is standing with a knife ready to cut me, but I give one big push and my gorgeous girl is here. She pooed all over my belly but I didn't care! After an hour and 5 minutes of pushing, at 3.05pm, she was finally here in my arms, weighing 6lb 13oz. My OH was in tears and so was I. It is an amazing feeling when you finally have your LO.*
The afterbirth was easy but the pains I got afterwards were horrific, worse than the contractions. I needed gas and air to get through them but was given pain relief and I recovered.*
Sorry for the very long story, but that was it! Ladies out there who are scared of giving birth, try not to be. I had a long labour but I would do it all again! It really is worth it in the end!
