Did anyone take vit d during or are raking vitamin d? What kind and how much was recommended? Tia

I take it sometimes, it's vit d3 5000mg. It's a pretty high dose, but the studies I've read say it is safe to take high doses in pregnancy!

Yes but most prenatal vitamins will have enough of it if you aren't deficient. If you are deficient then your doctor will let you know what the right amount for you is.

I was on 2000 iu of vitamin d before pregnancy and my dr wanted me to continue it daily cuz he said it helps prevent miscarriages.

I've been taking 5000 iU for about 4 years now and they told me to continue it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It won't hurt you a bit and on the up side, I have discovered that since I started taking it, I'm rarely sick too. And they tested my 10 month old and she didn't need supplements because I was taking them and it was in the breastmilk.

I was actually diagnosed as severely deficient during routine blood work. I've been on a prescription 50,000iu dose once a week for I believe about 8 weeks now?

I wouldn't take additional supplements unless your doc has run your levels and declared that you need them. Unlike the natural vitamin D we get from the sunlight that you can't get too much of, too much **synthetic** vitamin D can have adverse affects on your and baby's health.

It can be dangerous to be deficient for many reasons, but just as dangerous to be taking more than you need artificially.

I was taking 10,000-13,000iu a day because my levels were so low and bringing them up is actually what got me pregnant! As soon as I told my chiro I actually got pregnant she told me to immediately drop the dose to 5,000iu a day because any higher wasn't safe for my baby.

Taking vit. D has been hugely important for me and my pregnancy and health. I highly recommend a daily liquid form of vit. D as the weekly prescription or pill forms have been shown not to help as much.

I was taking 5,000 a day and was told to stop. My liver enzymes were quite elevated and my general practitioner said it could have been from taking too much vitamin D. So you may want to be careful, every woman is different with how much they need. My OBGYN recommends a vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy. He says most women are deficient in vitamin D these days. I believe he said 400-500 a day was safe for every body. I plan to talk to him more about this at my next appointment.

If you have PCOS and take metformin, it can make you even more vitamin D deficient and you may need higher doses. My friend's reproductive endocrinologist put her on 2000 a day.

In the uk all pregnant & breastfeeding women are recommended to take 10 micrograms of vit D by the nhs. I'm not sure how that converts into 'iu' though!!

I was just reading the thread and about to post that. It's standard advice in England

UK ladies - wouldn't that amount just be in a prenatal multi though? Are you meant to take an additional D capsule?

I think so yes, but a lot of women find pregnancy multivitamins make them feel quite sick (myself included!) so I just take folic acid & vit D. x

Oh & I found out that 10mcg is 400iu :)

My midwife prescribed me vitamin D along with higher dose folic acid before she had even taken any blood.. due to my raised BMI. its standard practice.

I was talking to my doctor about this the other day. She said that 1000 iu is recommended if you live in an area that doesn't get much sun throughout the year, being in western Canada I qualify. She mentioned that there is no real proof that high doses (4000- 5000 iu) have any benefit, and that most of it will get flushed out anyways.
