I didn't know this was bad. I've been taking multi vits for last 2 months. (On bottle says: Vit A: 800ug 100% ) I'm now nearly 5 weeks Preg & just been told vit A is bad. Of course stopped as from tonight but have I harmed baby? Birth defects?? Read it's dangerous esp in early weeks! (Article from daily mail. 2005). Thoughts pls. Thx

Vitamin A as beta-carotene is safe. It should say what form it is in on the label. If it's not in beta-carotene, I'd switch brands.

That's why you're suppose to take a prenatal not a multi vit....

Hopefully this will give you some reassurance

The level of vitamin a in the vitamin you were taking isn't close to harmful levels (and even at amounts in excess of 10,000IU every day for weeks there is less than 2% chance of it causing defects). As long as you haven't been consuming liver or other foods high in the retinol form of vitamin a you have nothing to worry about.

Too little vitamin a is worse than too much tbh.

Eta: just pointing out that 10,000 IU is equivalent to 1000UG. But the form - retinol vs beta carotene is more important to take note of.

I wouldn't worry too much as you're still very early. Just make sure you stick with the pregnancy multi-vitamins from now on instead :)

The Daily Mail is not a renowned source of scientific credibility so I wouldn't worry about it. Ask your doctor or midwife if you are concerned.
