Vitamin K?

Hello lovely ladies! I have been working on my birth plan a lot lately as I'm heading over to third tri within the week and I've been indulging in natural childbirth books. But I have yet to hear the arguements against a vitamin K injection. Could someone brief a pro/con list or direct me towards some useful reading?

I opted for oral vitamin K. My MW gives it at birth, one week and one month. I am also taking a vitamin K supplement that includes alfalfa. This way my baby is getting it through my milk as well. I didn't do the shot for 2 reasons, I didn't want to give him a shot when there's a pain free alternative and the shot is something like 10,000-20,000 iui. Seriously that's way excessive, a little body can't absorb all that.

what she said!! I have a no vit k policy in my birth plan and will be taking a vit k supplement after baby is born so she can get it through my milk at a natural level.

the recommended daily allowence of vit k for an adult is only 80 mg and Large doses of one form of vitamin K (menadione or K3) may result in liver damage or anaemia

The downside of this practice however is a possibly 80% increased risk of developing childhood leukemia. While a few studies have refuted this suggestion, several tightly controlled studies have shown this correlation to be most likely.4,5 A more recent analysis of six different studies suggests it may be a 10 or 20% increased risk. This is still a significant number of avoidable cancers.6

Apparently the cell division that continues to be quite rapid after birth continues to depend on precise amounts of vitamin K to proceed at the proper rate. Introduction of levels that are 20,000 times the newborn level, the amount usually injected, can have devastating consequences.
