Waterproofs for school trip

I'm hoping I can have some help please. My year 3 girl will be going on a school trip where they'll be doing things like building bridges over a river. It's not deep but they do fall and get soaked, especially if it's going to be raining. They will be outside the whole day and I don't know how to dress her??

I've looked at waterproof clothing but the waterproof jackets and trousers look so thin so how are they meant to keep warm all day outside? Can they wear a coat inside the jacket? What about shoes/boots? I don't know what to do? I'm just concerned she is going to get cold!

Waterproofs are meant to keep them dry, but she will need to wear warm clothes underneath. If she is truly going to be in water (like submerged in it), it likely won't keep her that dry (like a wetsuit would), but sort of that, it's better than nothing. You could always send her with a jumper underneath and then a waterproof coat on top (which she could take off if it gets too wet). I would send her in wellies as well as with thick socks those will keep her feet dry and warm better than walking boots will if she is going to be in water.

Thank you for your help, I've been so lost with this all! I've seen waterproof coats and trousers online, so I understand she needs to wear warm clothes inside but does that mean she can't wear her winter coat underneath? Her winter coat is lovely and warm but not waterproof and they are going to be out all day.

How cold is it going to be? Maria has to wear waterproofs to school most days at the moment, she just wears her normal trousers underneath the waterproof trousers, and a long sleeve shirt and a hoody/cardi/jumper under the waterproof coat - its about 10 degrees most days at the moment.

If its cold enough that she'll want to wear her winter coat as well as the waterproof coat then get the waterproof coat one size up so it fits over the winter coat. But waterproofs are usually not very breathable so they can get quite sweaty under them so she probably won't need the winter coat.

Agree with Natsku. I would also send a change of clothes and shoes with her, as I wouldn't want her to sit in wet clothes on the trip back or in school waiting for pickup.

I got some cheap trousers and water proofs from Mountain Warehouse - They were thick warm trousers and waterproof outside.

Natsku - I'm in the uk so it gets pretty cold in October. Trip is in October. Some of the children are already coming to school with their winter coats on. I'll definitely get a size up then, thank you.

Anne - I don't think they'd be changing clothes. They'd be outdoors all day and not sure there would even be facilities/time for them to get changed again.

Fingers crossed we get somewhere! Can't believe how tricky I'm finding this!

I'd get a set of waterproof trousers and look at a pair of walking style trousers to put underneath. Walking style trousers tend to dry really quick so if she does fall over, at least they will dry off quickly & the waterproof over trousers will keep her dry from the weather.

Jacketwise, we always have the 3 in 1 style (a fleece & waterproof jacket that can be worn separately or together) for the winter / wet days.
