Weight loss with natural birth vs induction

I have noticed that ladies who give birth on their own (i.e. their own body starting the process) tend to lose more weight right after birth, and the ones (like myself) who had to be artificially helped out lost less.

Am I imagining this?

Nope, not imagining...

The IV has been found to increase the water weight of a mama and she ends up retaining that weight a lot longer than a 'natural' mom. Obviously induction mamas have loads of IV fluid over the course of labor so that's part of it.

Now, this amounts to 5-10 lbs difference between the two women at the first stages of post partum... anything beyond that is other weightloss stuff (activity level, diet, etc.)

Sorry for posting this in the BF section, it should have gone to postnatal.

Thanks Marge, i knew there had to be a reason.

I kinda expected to drop a little more than my almost 25 lbs...Im also pretty sure they went thru 3-4 liters of IV fluids during my induction, which explained my unbelievable fluid retention in the days after...so thats what might be stalling me from getting rid of this fat suit (despie of walking 4-5 miles daily!!!)

I swear I wee'd all my fluids out before I left the hospital. The nurses were always suprised by how much I could fill the catheter bag up, and as quickly as I could fill it up as well.

I was swollen for almost five weeks!! I put on a lot of water weight.

How long does it take to get rid of the water weight??

I'm still pretty swollen. I can't get my wedding ring on my finger yet. I've lost about 25 lbs. but I only lost 12 after I had a 10.5 lbs baby and a 4 lbs. placenta but somehow only lost 12 lbs. I'm glad to know why now!

Remember it can take up to 9 months to shift the weight. I'm only just shifting the last few lbs and Kaya's six and a half months.

I had an induction (my waters were broken) and I lost 20lb straight off?

Toria, all that water in the IV weighs something too :) Like in Holldolls case, she ended up 'gaining' some weight as she had her almost 11 lb baby and it's 4lb placenta because of fluid she was given during labor.

It took the better part of a week to get the first initial water weight off. I can finally see my ankles but I still have some edema on my shins and legs.

Plus there's extra blood volume that's slowly decreasing over a month or so... it all adds up.

Just remember to continue avoiding caffine, drink LOTS AND LOTS of water that'll help pull the water weight off :)

I looked like a balloon at the end of pregnancy and had a natural birth! after giving birth my hands were so dry, I needed to moisturise them three days in a row all day long until they came back to normal! labour was hard physical work for my body and even during labour I lost so much fluid already! as well, I could not drink during labour, the only one attempt to drink failed into vomitting! and after giving birth I lost 10 kg in two weeks :hi:

I think an induction with IV and an induction by having your waters broken would produce different amounts of water. My hands are still pretty swollen.

I took me longer to lose the water weight too. I know its different since I had the c-section, but I had tons of fluid through the IV. Looking at pics when I left the hospital, compared to now, or even like a month after Erica was born, I can see such a difference. Marge you are SO smart. I never would have thought about the extra fluid you are getting in the IV. If they ever need to give me one again, I'm gonna be like "no thanks, I'm watching my weight" LOL. Theyre gonna think I'm nuts.
