I just realised that since I was admitted in hospital for slight contraction at 31 weeks 2 days, the nurses at the ward, on instruction from my OB, have been giving me a daily dose of Venteze tablets which contain Salbutamol sulphate normally used for the treatment of bronchial asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The thing is, I don’t have any of these problems or have a family history of them.

They started me off with two tablets three times a day and recently reduced the meds to one tablet three times a day. Does anyone know why? Of course I plan on asking my OB, but I thought I would try here as well.

Just to add, when I was first admitted, I received a second round of Dexamethasone steroid shots to mature babies’ lungs (first round was administered at 28 weeks due to my past with preterm labour) as well as Indometacin to stop the contractions. Luckily, contractions went away. My waters have also not broken and my cervix has not dilated thanks to the stitch I had put in at 16 weeks gestation.

Not sure why the salbutamol hun. Never heard that one before - it opens up airways so maybe its mode of action has some benefit for preventing prem labour? Indomethecin and dex also have other effects on your system as a whole, so maybe it counteracts those in some way.

Let me know when you do find out - curious now x

im a nurse and we give salbutamol to patients with raised potassium levels (it does more than its usual job of opening the airways). ive not heard of it used in preterm labour before so googled it and aparently yes it does suppress labour!! learn something new every day!! id still double check with your ob though at your next appointment. xx

Thanks ladies. I saw my OB this morning, but I was half asleep that I forgot to ask. Will defo ask him when he makes his rounds later today and update you.

Could be for the very reason you mentioned though ljo as OB did tell my OH on enquiry that he was giving me meds to suppress labour.

I have read that this helps to stop the uterus contracting. Another member on here uses it xxx

This update is long overdue. Spoke to my OB on Sunday and he told me that the tablets are also used to stopcontractions, as some of you have pointed out. Indeed we learn something new everyday.
