About time I get to write this!
Wednesday 4th september... 11 days overdue. I go into hospital at 8pm ready to start the induction procedure. At 9ish, lovely midwife comes in and hooks me up to ctg for half an hour or so... she then examines me, gives me a stretch and sweep and a dose of the gel in the hopes if getting things started. She told me that I waw just about 1cm but cervix was very soft.. and that the sweep she gave me was very very good. I assumed that none of this would work and I would be in this for the long haul (it took 3 vaginal pessaries and sweeps to get me into labour with dd1). She also discussed with me my wish for a waterbirth, and told me that if things started on their own, then i would most certainly be allowed to try. I didnt think they would, and was prepared to be givn the pitocin drip after a long wait!
Anyway, during the night between 2am and 6am I was getting frequent mild period pains about every 7 minutes or so. They werent strong at all so I figured they were down to the sweep and that my body was jusy being a bit crazy! At 6am, they vanished!
Got breakfast around 8.15 and waited to be examined again. At around 9am, i startee getting sharp stabbing pains almost in my lady bits! They were about as strong as my cramps the night before but a totally different pain.. not in my bump at all. They were totally manageable and i was able to keep talking/moving around during them.
10 minutes later, i was put on the ctg again and left for half an hour. The pains were very regular and the monitor showed them to be 1-3 minutes apart! I thought 'wahey... maybe im actually in early labour!'
Midwife came to examine me and she gave me another sweep... then she casually said 'youre a good 5cm'... say what!? She told me i should probably get OH there asap and went to get ne a birhing ball to lower baby who was still quite high up. The pains were still bearable although definitely more intense. I asked for paracetamol and when she gave me them, i spewed everywhere lol.
At about 9.45am, i was havint to breathe through contractions and lean over the bed on my ball... but i was coping fine. OH arrived around 10 and laughed at me when he got in!
I asked him to buzz the midwife to see when we could be moved (were still in the ward at that point) and she arrived and told us to follow her and they were starting to fill the pool. I had to wait 15 minutes for the pool to fill so just leaned over it on my ball. I had been given gas and air on arrivl to the delivery suite and it helped alot.
Finally, at 10.25 or so, i got in the pool. It was lovely and I sailed through ny contractions.. and felt like falling asleep in between them! If they had been longer than 1 minute apart... i probably would have!
Well... at 10.50ish, i got this horrible feeling that felt sooo wrong! It wasnt anyting id every experienced before (epidural with dd1) and was scared. With each contraction, I cried at the midwife 'What IS that??' Haha and she told me it was my waters bulging as they were still intact. I was told not to push, but my body was doing it itself.
*the midwife was a student who was asked to come look after me for an hour... little did she know she was about to deliver a baby... she told me not to push because there was nobody else there.. and had my OH close to the emergency cord just in case!*
With each contraction, i could feel my body push and i wasnt sure whether to help it along. I think I pushed a little with each, but not as hard as I could have! Another midwife arrived ajd sat back to supervise, leaving the student to take control (althouh she was letting me do it all). She told me to do what ny body wanted, and then she told me to push. So push I did! After 2 contractions, the head popped out! I also pooped and was a bit mortified! Hoping OH wouldnt mention it haha!
With the next contraction, i pushed and the rest of her came out and the midwife told me to pull her out of the water myself. I looked down and saw a baby!! I pulled her up and fell in love!
She was perfect! She didnt cry, just let out little whimper but apparently they dont alwyas cry in the water. Cord was pulled tight around the back of her neck and it took a minute to get it off, but she was absolutely fine and I got to hold her in the water a while. Her little bum was covered in vernix and she had hair!! She also pooped on my hand
They wrapped her and handed her to OH until i got out and delivered placenta then i got her back for some more skin to skin. I was checked and had a first degree tear, but didnt need stitches (i was so relieved!) My labour was just under 2 hours total! With 15 minutes of pushing, compared to my first birth which was 6hrs labour with 1.5hrs pushing!
Got wheeled to a different room with a nice bed and dd was measured and weighed.
8lbs 1oz, 56.5cm of perfection!
We are both doing great and I am still on cloud 9!
I just cant believe I got the birth I always wanted. Definitely recommend it!
