Welcome to the world Conner Edward

I am so excited to share the birth story of our new little man. It has been 10 wonderful days, so I will do my best to include as much detail as possible.

Monday 10/6/2014 39w2d- Midwife checked my cervix and I was barely a fingertip dilated. She attempted a sweep and was able to get me to 1+ cm. My cervix was still very thick and baby was still very high up. Other than losing a little mucous plug, I felt nothing.

Friday 10/10/2014 39w6d- Midwife preformed a second sweep and was able to dilate me to 2cm. My cervix was starting to thin, but was still fairly thick. Baby was still high up. I had a tiny bit of bleeding and lost more plug, but that was it. I was instructed to bounce on my ball in order to move baby down.

Sunday 10/12/2014 40w1d- I had on and off contractions all day, but they did not get any stronger or closer together. After taking a hot bath they fizzled out and I was able to sleep well that night.

Monday 10/13/2014 40w2d- Midwife preformed sweep number 3 and was able to stretch me to 2+ cm. She said I had thinned out a lot and baby was a lot lower. We decided that I would come back in on Wednesday 10/15/2014 (40w4d) for another sweep and then would report the hospital that evening to begin induction. I was hooked up for a NST (standard practice at my doctor’s for anyone who is past due) and baby looked great. I was having mild, short contractions, but couldn’t really feel them. As the day progressed the contractions became noticeable, but still short and mild. After a warm bath they again fizzled out overnight.

AND SO IT BEGINS 

Tuesday 10/14/2014
8:00am- I woke up with intense abdominal pain and I thought I needed to go to the bathroom. I sat on the toilet, but had no luck so I laid back down in bed. I then realized that the pains I was having were contractions. I started timing them and they were around 5 minutes apart and lasting about 30-40 seconds. I got some more house work done and spent some time with my daughter.

10:00am- I realized that I was stopping what I was doing during contractions to breathe through them so I laid back down and timed them again. They were 3-4 minutes apart and about a minute long. Since I was home with my daughter alone, I decided that I would call my husband on his lunch break and have him come home. I also called my midwife and since we are about 40 minutes from the hospital and had to drop off my daughter and pick up my mom she asked that we start getting ready to head into the hospital.

1:00pm- We headed out to do all our running around and get to the hospital. The car ride was not much fun and I was uncomfortable, but still managing well. We arrived at the hospital around 2:15pm and I was monitored and checked. I was still only a 2-3, but was contracting nicely so they sent me out to walk for an hour. When I was rechecked, I was at a 4 and was admitted into a labor room.

From that point on I lost track of time, but will do my best to recall what happened. Once in my room they started an IV just in case I needed something in an emergency and then left me to labor on my own. We watched some TV and I bounced on the birth ball. The contractions continued to increase in intensity and I was breathing through them. My midwife came in and checked me. I was at a 6 and she wanted to give me an enema due to some hard stool in my rectum. She also asked if I wanted her to break my water, but I declined because I wanted to use the labor pool. The nurse attempted the enema first and it was not successful so the midwife came in and did a second one that did the trick. At this point I asked that they start filling up the pool. I got in and it was awesome. I wish it would have been a little hotter, but I enjoyed it. I was probably in the pool for an hour or so when I started feeling “pushy”. I was asked to get out of the pool and the midwife checked me again. I was at an 8. At this point she requested that I let her break my water to make sure there was no meconium because if there was then the hospital policy was that a respiratory therapist had to be present at delivery. Unfortunately there was stool in my waters and at this point I became very nervous. My pain tripled and I was having a hard time coping. Finally I asked for the epidural… something I really didn’t want. The firs epidural did NOTHING! I was so upset because I was expecting pain relief. I then had to wait for another Dr. to come from home to attempt it again. This time it took on my right side, but not on the left. I continued to labor with a little less pain and was dozing in between horrendous contractions. I finally asked to be checked because of a change in the type of pressure I was feeling. I was at a 10. I pushed for about an hour and was having some trouble moving baby down. All of a sudden he started coming fast and the midwife barely had time to suit up. The cord was around his neck which is why I had some trouble. The let me husband cut the cord and placed him on my chest. He did not cry at first and it was decided that he needed to be suctioned so they took him to the warmer for about 30 minutes and then he was all mine. He weighed 7lbs 8.6oz (1 whole pound heavy than my daughter) and was 19 inches long. I was up and walking about 3 hours later and had a small tear and 3 small grazes. It was all worth it for my precious baby boy.
