LO is now over 13lb and 8 weeks old. He has been crying when put in the mei tai the past few times, though he settles fairly quickly just then giving little grunty type noises (I did wonder if it's too tight, but he can definitely breathe so I dunno ) and then falling asleep. I was wondering if his feet were uncomfortable in the froggy position now? When do I put them out of the sides of the carrier?

I'd say when he starts pushing up on his feet like he's trying to stand, and when he stops lifting his legs into the froggy position. My 6 week old has been legs out for a while cos she refuses to bend her legs up! Just make sure the carrier isn't too wide behind the legs.

You mean when he's in the carrier or just generally?

He will let you know, sounds like he is fine with froggy still. He'll basically start jumping up inside the carrier and throwing a fit!

I meant when he's in the carrier. I'd say as long as he's not pushing up inside the carrier, he's probably comfy.

you can narrow the meitai body by tying ribbon around or slipping hairband over and it draws the material in where babys legs sit...some littleuns (mine included) do not like froggy much and this resolves that as they can be legs our comfortably!

How exactly do you do this
I've tried with a hairband but it didn't really work...

I wasn't keen on the hairband method either but if you experiment while LO is in it you should be able to get it to work to try out. Just put a hairband round the body of the carrier (so you need to thread the straps through it, then slide it up the body of the carrier a bit) and move it to where you think it needs to be narrower, where LO's legs will stick out. A ribbon may be easier to adjust cos you can tighten or loosen it as needed. When LO is in the carrier with legs out, just move the hairband/ribbon up or down the carrier to the right place.

I did that at first to see if it would help and if LO would be comfortable with legs out, but then I sewed the carrier a bit narrower as a more permanent solution. I did this by folding the waistband with a couple of pleats and stitching them down securely. I did it by hand with stitches that are visible on the inside so they're easy to remove later on. Where the carrier switches from the waistband to the front panel, it sorts itself out. I did this with my first LO and took them out when she was big enough.
