I dunno if Im not getting it here, but why would someone choose to use pre-folds/fitteds nappies, the ones that are like terry and use a seperate wrap when you can get the likes of all in ones or pockets?

I dont get it:dohh:

I mean terry ones(or bamboo or velour etc) are NOT waterproof and the wee wee soaks the entire nappy so as LO is soaked all round his middle..............

Are there pro's for prefolds/fitteds? Cos I cant think of any!

Sorry, dont want to start an arguement but I'm seriously not getting it!

I personally like fitteds best...but for when they are more mobile. Hayden wears mostly fitteds and goes coverless unless he's sleeping. He doesn't leak through, when he gets damp on the outside I change him. If he were sitting in one place a long time because of the compression it would leak though so that's why I say when mobile.

When he was a little baby I liked prefolds during the day, he laid still so it was easy to change and wash and I changed him so often they worked out fine. But I did like pockets for going out, they would be less trim that way so fit under clothes better.

We still use pockets when he goes out, but at home it's only fitteds unless they happen to be all dirty. But the bamboo is so much softer, a better fabric, more absorbent, natural so I like that best...which is one reason I really like goodmamas, plus the fit is great and the super cute prints. For prefolds we do use cotton but they are inexpensive and great if you are changing often, easy to wash.

so, prefolds are cheapest option is this right?

I do love my goodmamas but as you mentioned above, if they are not mobile they can get wet through quickly! I will probably use these more on their own when he starts to crawl.

I haven't had the baby yet so I have no idea about what will work best for us, but I have bought a nice selection of nappies to try - most of them came in a trial pack from my local real nappy network (£25 for 7 different nappies and 3 wraps, plus accessories!).

Before I got that, I was adamant that I wanted to use Mothercare Smart Nappies so I'd bought enough to last nearly two days and I was going to supplement with various others because I like the pretty designs :)

In the trial pack though, there were a couple of prefolds and a muslin with folding instructions. Having played with everything (a LOT!) I'm now thinking that I might get some more prefolds or terry squares. I'm not sure exactly why I like them. Part of it must be the cost, but also I think I like the idea that it's quite old-fashioned and there's so much choice about how to fold them. I do like the idea that I'll be using something like my mum and grandma did before me. Also, I like origami!!! So probably not the best or most sensible reasons, but I'm going to give them a go, at least as back-ups to my main nappies.

I got mio prefolds at the very beginning, tbh it was a bit of a mistake on my part because i wasn't exactly sure what i was buying but knew i needed to see a nappy properly to work out all the info i'd read. I do like the mios but i much prefer my pockets they're just so easy and i'm really not convinced that a branded prefold such as mios work out that much better value to pockets price wise and conveinence wise tbh.

So do you think pockets/AIO's are the better option then girls?

x

personally, IMO i prefer the pockets. I haven't tried an AIO so can't comment. I do like my mios but i'm not buying any more.

Yeah Jacqui I had bought a couple goodmamas, didn't understand the hype, yeah sure they were soft and cute but like you, they didn't work well when he wasn't mobile, but I held onto them and I'm so glad I did, they are awesome for older babies/toddlers.

I would say pockets are a must have, even with me loving fitteds I have to have my pockets for going out they are trim and fit best under clothes and they are the easiest to deal with when out and about. So if your going with just one that's probably what I would choose.

We have the shaped terrys, fleece liners and wraps for now as our BG's & Wonderoos are still too big for him, we tried putting him in them at night and they rub on his legs and give him a red rash and blister/rub marks :(

I find the terrys really easy to use, they dont get soaked the whole way round, they get damp at the front but thats why he has his fleece liner to soak it all up. The only time their really wet is when he goes longer at night without a nappy change.

I also think they look so cute hanging on the washing line lol

i prefer pockets to the nappies&wraps systems :)

Like Rachel_C I haven't had my LO yet but have been stocking up on prefolds mainly because they are the cheapest option and the dry the quickest. I have no tumble drier and the LO will be a winter baby!!!!

I am considering buying some blueberry pockets for nighttime though, although i'll probably think the designs are too funky to be hidden under bed clothes!!!!

I only put Jack in terry squares twice and couldn't stand how bulky they were and how soon they needed changing (after one wee). They're probably less bulky now but I just don't see the point now I have lots of pockets. I used Little Lamb a few times but didn't like him being wet all over. But I may give it another try when he's crawling if the size 1 still fits then.

Prefolds I like, you don't have the wet all over issue because the fabric is just in the carriage part, not right round the hips etc. Bambino Mios were ok, but I prefer the Smart Nappy, it's just very expensive compared to other nappies on the market, because it's sized and not available in bulk.

I really prefer fitteds to pockets because it gives an extra barrier at the legs to prevent leaking. I have gotten my leg wet at least 5 times while feeding Alice and having a pocket leak on me. Also, the fit seems to be better, the one sized pockets and AIOs are always too tight on the tummy or too loose around the leg, but mayble Alice just isn't shaped right for them.

Not all brands fit all babies the same. Jack has had 1 leak from a pocket and that was at the point where he was moving up a size. I adjusted all the poppers on his one sizes and have had no problems since.

Fitteds, however, leaked all the time as the covers just weren't quite up to the job of covering the cloth and once that was soaked through (after an hour) it leaked right out.
