It's my grandfather's name, and DH's absolute favorite boy name. I'm not so sure I can imagine a baby or a little boy named Alan though. I can certainly picture a man Alan... lol
My other concern is our favorite girl name is Adeline (a family name from DH's side). Are Alan and Adeline too similar for siblings?
I don't mind adding that our last name is Smith. Would Alan Smith be too common sounding?

It's not a name I would use personally I'm a fan of older names but for some reason I can't see a baby Alan lol but if you like it go for it!!!

It is very similar to your girls name though and I think it will be too much to have siblings that similar sounding :) x

I appreciate your honesty!! I share all the same sentiments. I really love Charles (nickname Charlie) but wonder if that's just as common.

Charles is really cute as is Charlie as a nn, although its popular its such a classic name and always works well.

Charles Alan smith works very well x

Sorry but i just cannot imagine a little baby called alan. I dont know why! Babies do grow into their names though..
I must agree with pp Charles Alan Smith sounds very nice indeed :)

Its ok. Doesnt blow my socks off or anything, but its a classic and you cant go wrong with a classic. Babies do grow into their names so I wouldnt worry about not being able to imagine a baby Alan.

Honestly though, I wouldn't worry about it seeming "too grown up" in my opinion. As PP said, babies grow into their names and I think it's better to have a name that suits an adult more than a child than the other way around, after all we're adults for a lot longer!

This is my husband's name! Lol. I'll be honest, Alan Smith a very plain name. We joke all the time about how it sounds like an alias. Alan is a nice name and I totally understand using it as an honor, so if that feels right, you should do it. However, at least in my DH's case, I feel like he's so much more than an Alan, if that makes sense. Plus, I hate the nn Al, ugh. Luckily not many people call him that.

I do not think Alan and Adeline are too similar, though. Maybe give him a more distinctive middle name, which he can choose to use when he's older? DH's middle is Paige, so yeah...way to go MIL, lol. He can't really use that, as it's usually viewed as a feminine name.

im not sure what to vote lol

its OH name and he goes by Al, my friends OH goes by Alan

I have friends called Allie but they are all actually called Alister/Alistdar
