Can someone please give me a clue as to what 'lambda' sign means on my ultrasound notes?

Quote- an anterior placenta with a clear 'lambda' sign present at the membrane/ placental interface is noted'

Our twins are DCDA. The sonographer wouldn't say if she thought they were identical or not but wasn't sure if the 'lambda sign' would shed any light

Quite frankly google is confusing me further☺️☺️

Many thanks

I am not a twin mama, but love looking into these kinds of medical things. Following the links from the below page it looks like it *suggests* about 88% chance that your babies are non-identical.

I think them seeing that on the ultrasound suggests the babies are in two different sacs. the placenta/placentas have grown and the lambda sign describes the way it sits between the two sacs (see below). So, the babies have different sacs, and are more likely to be non-identical. But they could still be identical and just split to form their own sacs.

Congratulations!!

They use "lambda sign" or "T sign" to describe the look on the scan of the junction between sacs of DCDAs and MCDAs respectively.
It means you have a clear "Y" shape where the sacs meet so that = DCDAs. If they were MCDA they would have a join that looked more like a T than a Y.

If they are DCDA there is no way of telling by scan if they are actually identical or not if they are the same sex. When you have your 20 week scan if they are boy/girl they are defo* frats (*except in one very unlikely exception). If you find you have 2 boys or 2 girls you will have to wait until they are born to find out! You can have genetic testing or it may be obvious. It's like an extra special surprise for parents of DCDA same sex twins.

Thanks guys- much appreciated!

Haha-damn it I'm dying to know if they are identical... Guess I'll have to wait a little longer! 😄

Ha! How far along are you? Are you going to find out genders at 20 weeks?

We're 11 weeks along Meezerowne, so still fairly early days.
Will be finding out.. More for practicalites, we already have two boys so need to know what we need to keep/ get rid of.. It's all a bit daunting but now I'm getting head around its very excited.

Were you girls identical Or fraternal?

Congrats BTW! :flower:

Yeah I think it's defo more useful to know with multiples. Particularly if you are using hand-me-downs etc.

Finding out is always a shock I think as it's something that happens to other people. But don't listen to any naysayers twins are definitely awesome!

Mine were DCDA and when they were born it was pretty obvious that they are frats. They had very different features and ear shapes etc. So I didn't bother having them tested. Now as toddlers it's even more obvious one has curly hair and blue eyes the other straight hair with hazel eyes and polar opposite personalities.
