Little Ted is 2 months old and has mastered the art of breast feeding - apart from when he occasionally gets carried away and nearly chokes and he's gulping too much. But I think that'll sort itself in time?
Anyway, what I've noticed this week is a bizarre tendancy for him to nuzzle the nipple before he feeds. I put him to the breast and he gets all wriggly, seems to sniff the nipple and fling his head from side to side all excited, rubbing it on his face for 5 or 10 seconds or so before taking the plunge and latching on and having a fine old feed. It tends to leave him with a milky face! Maybe he wants moisturizer?!?

Any ideas what this is all about?

Well, when my babies did that, they were about to the age where they could nearly self-latch.

I always figured they were just getting excited, had minimal head/neck control, saw the object of their desire (the booby ) and just wobbled a bit before the latch :)

It gets better and they quit doing that when they REALLY get good at self latching :)

Sam used to do that too at about Ted's age. I always thought it was just impatience...knowing he's about to be fed and not quite managing to get there on his own! He's stopped doing it now - the second he sees it he's on there and feeding...no time for any sort of positioning any more  x

it does seem like excitement - someties he'll just sniff the nipple excitedly before grabbing his chance. funny little man. must be like me sniffing the box of chocolates before diving in.

Max still does this now and every single time he does I laugh so hard i need to get him back into position lol I call it " bobbing for apples" and i always tell him " theres only one nipple you cant miss it " but he pulls back and goes in for the kill many times before getting it !

Bren used to do the same thing, he was almost frantic in his movements.

jaiden does this, but we still have latching issues. when are they supposed to be able to latch on themselves? jaiden is 7 weeks on monday and i still have to hold his head with one hand while squashing my nipple and chucking it into his mouth as soon as it opens! and even then it can mean a few attempts.

he was 3 weeks early though, so could it be because he is small? at the moment he weights 8lbs 9oz, so maybe my boobs are still a bit big for his tiny little mouth lol.

bobbing for apples if def what i think of when he does it LOL, its so hard not to laugh! and he gets so frustrated with himself x

Max had problems latching and still does hence why he gets formula too lol he was tongue tied and still is so its hard for him ..he never actually latched on himself well ..i dont know i know i have to hold the dam boob for him lol

i guess each baby is different. Ted was 3 weeks early too and seems to be able to latch on well on his own now he's 8 weeks. I just have to aim him in the right direction. After his sniffing or bobbing he sucks his way on and off he goes!

Bella does this too. She stopped doing it about 3 weeks ago. Now she only does it if she's REALLY hungry or half asleep.

I still have to help Sharlotte a little. I'm a bit well endowed, and it's just a bit hard to get things in the right spot for each of us if I don't help a bit...

I imagine in a couple weeks things should get much better. So around 14-16 weeks...

That nudging and nuzzling is to stimulate the let down of your milk so that it flows straight away they latch on. If you don't believe me get your OH to give your nips a tweak! LOL

Sometimes when i get the booby out, Peyton's eyes get real big. He knows he's about to get some BOOBALICIOUS! Then he kind of uses them as arm rests, lol!!! (my boobs are bigger than his head,so I have to make sure I'm not blocking his nose so he can breathe.) The funniest thing that he does is he'll fart really loud and then look at me like "What, yeah I just did that". :laugh2:

Ally has been doing the shakey head thing since he was about 2 wks old (2 wks late though) and he goes 'a-hah, a-hah, a-hah' when he does it. I think it's so cute and one of the only things i like about breastfeeding!

yeh courtney does this.... so funny!!

I try and help her direct her head but shes strong when she does it!! She does it with her dummy too....!! And then sucks like maggie simpson
