What is your 6 month old's portion size for solids?

I know they say about the size of a baby's fist, or about 2 oz (4 Tablespoons) of your solid… but that doesn't seem to be enough for my little guy! We finish off that little portion in about 3 minutes! He's still getting most of his food from the bottle obviously… but is anyone else needing to give a bigger portion of solids at each sitting? I'd love to hear other baby's eating schedules. Ours looks something like this:

7:00 - 7oz milk
8:00 - Breakfast solid (how much?!)
11:00 - 7oz milk
11:30 - lunch solid (???)
3:00 - 7oz milk
5:30 dinner solid
7:00 - last milk feed of 7oz

Does this sound like too much? Too little? FTM has no idea what she's doing… :dohh:

Routine sounds great - same as we were at that age except dd2 never ate much. Now at 8 months she eats really well.

At six months she ate about a ice cube size main and a small yoghurt.

Now she eats 2 ice cube sized main and a big pot of fruity mush.

Dd1 on the other hand ate buckets of food from six months. But she was a lot bigger.

Thanks! Jack is a pretty big boy... about 18 pounds before his 6 month birthday, and long too... I'm sure he'd eat a whole steak and potato dinner if I offered it to him! I want him to be satisfied but I don't want him to over indulge!

2-4 tbsp. sounds good to start with. You don't want to give too much per meal when they are first weaning; they may still seem like they would eat more happily, but they need their body to learn to digest it properly when starting solids. Giving too much in each meal can cause constipation or diarrhea if they aren't ready for bigger servings yet, digestive-wise. Just start off slowly, as you are doing, several tablespoons of solids.

Then, as your baby gets older and more adjusted to digesting solids, you can then increase the amounts of solids, while decreasing the volume of milk. I think by time my younger son was around 9 months or so, we were pretty much on regular meals with him, eating meal size portions. His milk was then cut down to about 4 oz servings at a time, total of about 20-24 oz a day.

This might get moved to weaning section.

Our routine is pretty much the same as yours. Breakfast will be a fruit pouch/half a banana/ small jar of porridge each. Lunch is half a jar each or the equivalent size of something homecooked and then a little petit pois yogurt each.
It does sound a lot but they are little and have no problem finishing it off. I did start off with just 1 meal then 2 and now 3 and it hasn't caused any problems.

If he'll eat it and you're offering milk first and solids later, I'd offer him as much as he is happy to have. We did BLW and at 6 months, we were just starting with 1 meal a day (lunch), plus she was still on probably 6 bottles a day (including 2 during the night). For her one meal, she was really just sort of tasting food. She'd eat a bit of the top of a broccoli floret, or some banana pieces, or some avocado off a piece of toast. But it wasn't much. If he's happy to eat plenty, let him. Just keep up the milk as that's really important too.

Dd has 4 bottles a day along with 3 spoon feeds, she takes maybe a tablespoon at each meal and not much more. DS was a massive eater in comparison!
