What questions should my husband ask the Dr. after laparoscopic surgery?

I have a lap tomorrow morning and don't know what questions my husband should ask the Dr. after surgery. I have a post-op scheduled for May 13th and I can't wait that long to find out the results.

On another note- what can I expect after the lap? I've never had surgery and am scared out of my mind.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Kelly

I'm not sure what they would tell him after the surgery (not sure if they'd give him details or want to discuss it with you both) Maybe someone else can shed some light on that for you!

But I have had Laparoscopic surgery before--on my appendix. You will definitely be sore after, don't think you'd be able to go back to work for a couple of days. Hope that helps!

Thanks! I hope they tell him what they found, otherwise I'll be ringing the Drs. phone off the hook!

I had mine 2 months ago - and when i woke up in recovery he told me very quickly (like in 20 secs) that he removed endo and cysts, and that he didn't remove my tubes as planned, then as he was walking away I asked why haven't I got pg and he said due to endo. That was all I saw of the surgeon because he has surgeries back to back all day.

I then got my official results 6 weeks later at a follow up appt - which just confirmed exactly what he told me when I woke up. May 13 isn't that far away really - that is only 10 days later. Likely you will hardly get chance to talk to the surgeon.

I have had a number of surgeries - but this was one of the best yet - sore but not too bad - felt like I could dance around when I got home. I had definite shoulder pain - but moving around helps. i didn't have to take any meds either. They warned me that bleeding may occur after - but I didn't have any. Also one thing I wasn't prepared for was not eating for 1-2 days afterwards to wait for their to be room in my stomach because it is so filled with air from the surgery.

Goodluck.

Thank you so much. I know this surgery shouldn't scare me but I'm freaking out since I don't like Drs. or hospitals!! The things we go through to have children!!

Hi hun

Good luck for today. I also had lap surgery for my appendix and following on from what the others have said, the pain in my shoulder was far worse than any pain from my surgery. I am terrified of hospitals and I'd never had an op before but it really was fine. Just be prepared for the shoulder pain (something to do with the gas they fill you with shifting your diapragm up I think I read)cos no one warned me of that. Even though your op is different it sounds like that bit will be the same

All the best hun

when i had my lap done my oh had to go and when i came back from surgery the they told me what they did its nothing to worry about your home the same day hun xx xx

Surgery went well and so far not much pain. The outcome was slightly different then I had planned, they had to remove both tubes. So, IVF here I come!

sorry to hear they removed both tubes....but on a positive note u have answers now & u can start ur ivf journey....have heard sooo many great success stories with ivf, good luck xx

So sorry to hear your results hun but you are one step closer now to your sweet babe! IVF will be great for you! ...do you (or anyone) know what day of your cycle you should have lap done? I'm going to the doc in 2 days and will be CD6 and would rather not wait this whole cycle for the lap..Thanks so much!

I was on CD4 and was told that was fine. So far recovery has been a breeze...except for the stomach virus I've picked up from my husband. My post op was rescheduled for the 12th and I will find out when we can start IVF then. Have any of you heard much about mini-IVF?

Thanks so much buckandkelly! Hmmm I wonder if when I go on CD6 they will be able to still schedule it right away? I can't wait for Friday to come now so I can find out! Did you have the pain in your shoulders from the gas like i've read a lot about? I'm glad your recovering well! Did you take time off work or were you ok after a couple of days?! I have heard mentions of mini IVF but not sure what it all entails....interested to find out though!

Oh and did you end up having to have DH ask the questions after lap or were you coherant enough to ask and remember yourself?! Thanks

I felt the gas but they were more annoying than anything. It seemed once I got settled in a comfy position I would feel the gas. I took gasX and walked around some to move the gas and then I was fine. The Dr. never talked to me after surgery, or I was told he didn't. I woke up in recovery and asked my husband what the Dr. said, he had pics and notes the Dr. had wrote down for me.

My husband was home with me until yesterday and I feel fine to pick my daughter up from school today. I actually just left my job to focus on TTC, but I would have taken the whole week off just because you feel so worn out. I haven't taken a pain pill since yesterday at noon if that tells you anything.

I am the biggest chicken when it comes to Drs. and had never had surgery of any kind. This surgery was very easy and luckily recovery has been uneventful. Your stomach muscles feel like you've done 3 Billy Blank workouts (back to back) and your worn out. I didn't bleed much and would actually forget to take my pain meds. You'll be fine!!!

I hope your Dr. is able to schedule you soon!!

Thank you so much Kelly! I'm so glad to hear that it isn't too bad of a surgery! I'm a pretty big chicken with doctors and surgeries too so i'm glad you relieved my worries! I hope your recovery continues to go well and i'm really hoping they will schedule my lap asap instead of waiting until next cycle!

I am booked in for a lap 2 weeks today but I am not allowed my OH with me he has to leave me on the ward and come back when I am ready to go. Which I dont really like the idea of.

How come they had to remove your tubes? My doctor said he wouldnt do anything like that. If they want to do anything like that they said they will give me another op.

Good luck with the IVF.

Do you know what they are looking for with the lap? I thought for sure I would have some form of endo, but my husband said they didn't mention that at all.

He did say the cutest thing during recovery....which he didn't think I remembered! The nurse told him to make sure I didn't bleed through more than 1 pad per hour, and he said "OK". She asked if I had pads at home and he said "I think so, if not can I get them at the pet store?" He thought she was talking about puppy pads!! lol She just laughed and said "men are so naive".

I thought that was so cute!!

I have suspected endo but have told them not to remove anything other than endo without my consent. Did they tell you they might have to remove your tubes before hand?! Im scared now! Lol.

I was only supposed to have 1 tube removed due to either a hydro or cyst and the Saline ultrasound showed my other tube was fine. During my pre-op appt the Dr. Toma went over what he was going to do and I told him my main goal was to be pregnant and trusted him. Once he got in he saw that the one tube he thought was good was actually blocked at the top by a hydro so he chose to remove it. He explained to my husband that I could have been pregnant 50x and the fluid from the hydros would have killed the embryo every time.

So, now I'm going to do IVF and have 2 chances through insurance.

No, I consented before hand to having both removed if necessary. I only wanted to go through surgery 1 x and if it was a hydro there is no fixing it except to remove it. Many Drs. won't even do IVF if the patient has a hydro since the fluid can kill the embryo.

I have a cyst on my left ovary. My tubes could be damaged from PID. This is just really explorative.

How long had you been TTC for?

And one of the lads at work has just had a sucessful 1st IVF treatment & his wife is now 6 weeks pregnant with a heartbeat. So it works and I wish you all the luck in the world!
