Hi Haley - are you in the states? Smiley pretty much summed it up and it really does depend on the RE, but one RE I went to had a checklist (an actual sheet of paper) leading from simple treatments to IVF. I only saw him for a short time because I didn't like the checklist when I knew exactly what was wrong with me and had been through all the tests in the past. If you haven't done a lot of testing though, the checklist style doc. might work for you. It was things like SA, HSG, bloodwork on various days of your cycle, ultrasound, pelvic exam. I think the very first appointment was mostly chatting with the doc, taking some blood and discussing history.
Another RE I went to was much better. The first appointment was just a chatty appointment - no blood work or exams. He basically told me I could do whatever treatment I wanted because I was "seasoned" and knew what I was doing.
I had similar experiences with other RE's I saw. Most first visits were a bit chatty and usually included a pelvic exam, ultra sound (either that day or follow-up appt.), and blood work.
Good luck! I think it's important to find a dr. that you can trust and that will listen to you.
