Ok here is the dilemma I hope people can give some thoughts on. My LO poos once every three days, hardly burps and farts for Britain. By day 3 of no poo she is so unhappy its awful. The farts wake her up and make her cry. When she does poo she isn't constipated but as you can imagine there is a lot of it! We saw a different HV today who went through the normal bicycle legs, wiping bottom with wipes, clockwise rubbing and cooled boiled water. The legs do make her fart but she hates the water - if isn't milk Phoebe thinks what is the point? Anyway the HV went through the idea of switching milk but said it was up to us as it was hard to say what milk might help. She also thinks LO might be teething early - what joy - adding to the irritability. We started off on SMA gold, then normal cow and gate and then comfort cow and gate. She likes the comfort but not sure if it is having any effect. So the question is... would you change her milk and to what? or is there anything else that might make her go?

|Thanks x

Hmmmmm

I've heard of some people giving their LO's baby juice to try to encourage some movement in that department but you would have to ask your HV - I'm not really comfortable giving advice. The other thing I do is pop an extra 1/2 an oz of water into a feed.....Earl will take water but only mouthfuls which sometimes don't help. It's literally 1/2 an oz and this will get things moving. I don't know whether anyone would recommend this either but if you can give water then surely it's no different?

As for changing milks....I don't know as they can all cause constipation (although Earl seems to be having the opposite reaction to Hungry Baby milk and it's making him more regular..... strange child that he is?!) Have you tried giving her the ready made stuff? That will go straight through Earl and in my thread on the subject it was confirmed to be a recognised mehtod of relieving constipation.

I hope you sort her out....and Earl is teething too! Amazing how similar he and Phoebe can be sometimes!! Earl seems to be doing well on the occasional dose of bonjela teething gel....and it would seem he likes banana flavours!!

I've always been told that if it's not solid, then it's not constipation and that some babies will go a couple of times a day and others only a couple of times a week...

We went through a stage of Violet crying everytime she pooped and I was so worried, I spoke to a couple of HVs, who all said it's completely normal and some babies just do and also reiterated the above. I think it also mentions crying whilst pooping in the 0-5 book given out by HVs.

Not really sure on the crying whilst farting though..? Do you use anything like Infacol? If not, you could try that or gripe water for wind but if you do use it already, try cutting it out as Infacol has been known to cause constipation.

Not sure if that helps at all hun x

Earl and Phoebe do sound alike! I loved his pictures in baby club - all we ever get is 'Gosh isn't she a big girl'. Had her measured today - of the scale for height now!

Might try the teething gel for the teething problem - her little cheeks were so red at bedtime and she wasn't screaming at all so its not that!

I've heard about adding watered down orange juice but don't want to do that- its not that bad.

We tried ready made milk yesterday and no difference so I'm thinking that comfort milk might not make that much of a difference to her.

Will read up in the birth to five book - see if there is anything good there

It is so hard to know what to do sometimes as changing one thing might mess her up! Anyhow better go, she's giving her daddy the run around about going to bed!
