What classifies someone as a high risk pregnancy? Is it just previous miscarriages? Age?

Our first child has a chromosomal abnormality, had heart and lung problems in the womb and immediately repaired once born. I, however, suffered no issues through the entire pregnancy and had a very successful and quick healing, trauma-free C-section.

Our new OBGYN only sees patients at 10 weeks for the first visit, that's fine, but if I am a high risk patient, I would like to know if they should be treating me/baby as that or what. I also need to know if I should be worried LOL..

id say yes it comes down to the problems LO had also i know im medium risk as i had a emergency c section xx

That's what I thought. Despite me having been healthy through the pregnancy with no complications, my LO had some issues (I even had to go to a pediatric cardiologist for weekly check ups for DD while she was still in the womb!) from 23w onward, so I figured that my file would be a "med - high risk" case and they didn't seem to really care?...

I had per eclampsia and emcs with dd and later I risked a pulmonary embolism with fluid on my lungs due to severe swelling so that makes me high risk now

That makes sense since there were maternal complications. Best of luck and blessings to you on this next 9 months!

i thought it came down to mother and baby - maybe its just the mother.

i assume they are keeping a close eye on baby anyway x

I'm counted as high risk due to my last baby being born by section. Lots of things can deem you high risk xx

on my notes pack it had like a flow chart to determine what was high risk

it would ask a question and if no, move on if yes tick box etc and based on a number of ticks in certain areas determines if high risk

hope this helps

It does! :) I suppose it means I just have to wait for the 10w u/s or see if I miscarry..

I had 'perfect' pregnancies with my first three children. Although my second son had a congenital kidney problem that had to be monitored during pregnancy and my third son was born with Downs Syndrome and had to have heart surgery at 6 months old. I was still classed as low risk after that though.

I am now classed as high risk as I have a blood clotting disorder that increases my risk of miscarriage to 80% without meds and means I am at high risk of getting blood clots, especially during pregnancy. I've had several early miscarriages and lost my twin girls after they were born at 24 weeks as my waters had gone at 14 weeks. (Maybe due to my blood disorder) I also had gestational diabetes last pregnancy, which out me at higher risk of it this time.

I am so sorry  An old friend lost her twins at 6 months pregnant last year in December. I'm pretty sure it was due to her pre-eclampsia.

Our DD has Down syndrome :) Her heart surgery was at 2 weeks old! You'd never know now.

So I'm supposing it means mother needs to have a medical problem/issue/complication to issue as high risk? If so, that eases my mind. I do wish you the best! Goodness knows you're a bigger sport than I am!

I had no medical issues but had my first at 27 weeks, no cause found.
During my second pregnancy I was classed as high risk, yet didnt get consultant appointments til after 12 weeks. I actually was relieved to have the extra checks, scans and support. Although the appointments became tricky with DD1 still so young!
I was discharged at 32 weeks from the consultant as they felt this was an "ok" time to leave me be. I went to term with no complications there

There's no big reason to worry if you are classed as high risk, it just means you need a little more attention and checks but that's a good thing overall

Oh I am not worried! I actually would prefer to extra checks :) I was considered high risk with DD because of her heart issues and chromosomal abnormality, so I was seen weekly by my OB and then as well as the neonatal specialist until birth. I'd actually prefer special treatment LOL

I'm high risk. I think I'm my Midwife's worst nightmare, 38, overweight, diabetic and Rhesus factor..........

I believe it's problems with the pregnancy. I had 2 losses and my Dr is not treating this one as high risk as I have 2 healthy children both healthy pregnancies prior to the 2 losses. What I did in my last pregnancy and this one was request bloods and early u/s since I was worried, both dr's agreed with my request.

Wondering now if it depends on the doctor? A former friend of mine had not yet had a child yet but had several miscarriages beforehand. They conceived naturally, but she was considered high risk, she said, because of her multiple miscarriages over the years.

Oh well! I suppose I'll find out at the end of march lol

high risk usually means if there is a health or life risk with you or the baby...
like m/c high blood pressure...preterm labor....early delivery and so on...
sure there are others, this is just a few
hope this helps some

Im considerd high risk as i had servere pre eclampsia from 20 weeks and had a placental abruption at 25 and 3 and had an emcs, lost my little boy at 2 days old ! Iv since had 3 mc so im under a midwife and 2 seperate consultant, already been seen by midwife and see consultant next week !

With being high risk i will be seen every week with scans every other week !

I'm considered high risk as I had a hemorrhage after Liam was born and have "abnormal antibodies."
I have to have blood taken every 4 weeks up to 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks after that.

What a coincidence your daughter has Downs too! My son will be 9 next month, the time has flown by! His heart seems fine now and luckily he doesn't have many health issues at all, he's never even had a chest infection.

They certainly didn't class me as high risk after I had my son. I declined any screening tests in subsequent pregnancies and made that clear from the outset, as the screening seems a waste of time to me, it doesn't really tell you anything at all and I wouldn't have diagnostic tests such as amino due to the risk of miscarriage.

I think there has to be a risk to either your life or that of your baby's, or a factor that could cause potential problems or needs to be managed to make someone high risk.

In my case, I'd rather be low risk and be as ignorant as I was when I sailed through my first three pregnancies with not a care in the world. :flower:
