My LO sometimes only feeds for 2-3 mins a time but wants fed every half an hour to an hour. Other times he feeds nearly ten min then lasts 3 hour - so confused!! should I be in a routine by now?

Do your babies sometimes only snack?

Also whats your ideas on alcohol? I would like a small glass of wine and wanted to check if any of you suffered side effect with your let down?

Routine, nope...dont believe in them at all. Not much good getting yourself into a "routine" and then having a growth spurt come along and trying to stick too it...ends up with unhappy hungry baby and unhappy tired mummy...not good!
You want to try and encourage him to feed for longer than a couple of minutes at a time, the reason hes wanting fed again after half an hour is because he wasnt full. This should improve with time anyway but try and wake him up a bit if hes drifting off at the breast after a couple of minutes. Its no big deal really if hes gaining weight though so dont worry about it if you are ok to carry on as you are.
Personally I dont drink at all whilst pregnant or breastfeeding but a small glass of wine wont hurt your supply or letdown if you stay well hydrated on water.

im the same with routines! lol dont get me wrong i have tried but lo has other ideas! he likes to change every day, i suppose he sets his own routine in away, likes to nap at the same times go to bed ect... but for food it varies. If i stay home then he wants to feed all the time so i tend to go out now and he goes longer.

In the young days he would feed every hour/hour and a half but as hes gotton older its more like 2/3. This is the day tho! At night its a completely different story, he used to wake every hour sometimes half and hour. Now ive got some decongestion capsules and nurofen and he seems to sleep every 3hrs now (as of last night) so we will see! Think it was teething! but ive also started BLW so this might contribute to longer hrs!

Just hang in there it does get better! In regards to alcohol, just make sure you feed them before you drink. Im sure one glass of wine wont make a difference. Over Christmas i drank a small bottle of baileys over a couple of days and this made no difference at all. Some one said it will make them drowsy but it had no effect. I think every one is different. And you can get some conflicting info on drinking and bfing! xx

I feed my little guy on demand, sometimes for 2 - 3 minutes, sometimes for 30 - sometimes he seems to want to feed straight for hours. When I want to have a glass of wine, I make sure to have enough EBM for 2 large feeds, then I drink it right after feeding, and pump and dump when he eats. Only done it a couple times but I haven't found that it affected anything

We had no routine whatsoever tbh..now we might do but i dont really notice lol?
He just feeds when hes hungry, until hes full...dont worry as long as hes hydrated (getting lots of wet nappies) and not losing weight then ur doing ok pretty much
As far as drinking goes iv been advised that if you r gonna have a drink then do so as long before your next feed as possible, ideally immediatley after you feed him so your body has time to process the alcohol.
The whole 'pump and dump' idea doesnt work, that is the idea that you pump out the alcohol tainted milk and then after you will be ok. Thats wrong, for as long as the alcohol is in your blood, it will be in your milk.
Obviously getting blind drunk is a no no, but from what iv been told and read the phrase is 'if your ok to drive, then your ok to feed'
Lol i told my OH this and he looked at me confused, then said
'But you dont know how to drive?'
:dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh:
Hes so intelligent xxxxxx

I attended a breast feeding session that was midwife led who specialised in bf and she said "ok to drive = ok to feed". She also said if you was on a night out you can feed your baby the day after (once sober) which I was surprised about!

Daisy feeds on demand for usually about 15 or 20 mins every 2 to 3 hours.

I have had one pint of shandy which was three quarters lemonade and one quarter lager and I couldn't stop worrying in case it afffected my milk so have never drunk since!

mnoebury is exactly right

ok to drive= ok to bf, and you can bf next morning as long as you would be under the limit for driving.

The reason for this is that alcohol passes freely into your milk, the same way as it passes freely into your bloodstream. It also passes back out of your bloodstream & milk in exactly the same way. The idea that you have to pump & dump is a common misconception - just feed your baby if you would be ok to drive.

If you have a small glass of wine, thats fine. The alcohol levels in your milk will peak 30-60mins after you drink (90 mins if with food).

Hope this helps x

ps To keep your baby awake for feeding, try taking their feet out of their babygrow and you can stroke the feet too if they start dozing off. If your baby does doze off, and wants fed again soon after, offer the same breast they last fed off before offering the other side. This will help ensure they get more of the calorie rich hindmilk, rather than just thirst quenching foremilk.

routine

I wind lo vigerously to keep him awake but to be honest sometimes he wants to feed after an hour for comfort which I am happy with

Nope to routine, alcohol i had one at Christmas (less than a unit) but he had ebm
