I never really thought about why babies wear vests under everything, but now I'm starting to stock up on 18 - 24 month clothes I'm starting to wonder whether it's worth bothering with them anymore?!

Especially as the weather will start to warm up soon (in theory!).

Do your 1-2 year olds still wear them?

Does it really matter?!

My 18 month old is now in 18-24 month vests. I love them as it is still cold here plus they keep the nappy in place. I cant see any 2-3 year old ones in the shop so just bought her regular vests (sleeveless ones for summer). I think she will wear a vest under her clothes for a long time. Our summer is not really a summer so even under a dress I would put a vest on her.

Micah didn't wear vests last summer (from about 20 months old until 2) then it got cold and I started putting him in them again. He's nearly 2.5 now and most don't fit anymore. Some days he wears them others I just layer tops.

I still put vests on my 5 year old. not the ones with poppers obviously but i like my girls to have that extra layer for warmth to keep there little bodies warm . I live In scotland though and its often very cold so unless I was in a warm weather country I would put vests on. also if there clothes ride up there actual skin isnt exposed to the cold too

I have 2-3 vests (Tescos do them) but my 18mo has been in them a couple of months now lol. Usually I just keep them in them until they outgrow the biggest size then I just go without. As you say with the warmer weather they may not be necessary, but I likes to dress my boys in a vest and shorts in the hot weather and if I could now they're bigger I would this year but it's not looking likely.

We had the 2-3y popper vests too (Next also do them) but by Autumn when the boys were 2 1/2 they had outgrown them. So we just bought normal vests (also called wife beaters I think lol) from mothercare. They will wear them till it is nice and warm out. At the moment we still get such cold winds that I prefer them to have them as an extra layer.

Mothercare do 2-3yr vests eutg poppers and I've used them this winter (lo is 2.5), I'm hopeful that we'll be out of nappies this spring so vest with powers will be out!

Since potty training we've progressed to vests without poppers just as an extra layer in the really cold weather

LO still sometimes wears poppered vests as night if it's really cold, once he out grows them I won't buy any more (they are 18-24mnt and still fit, just!)

My lo is 26 mo and I still put a vest on him. He has the ones without poppers as he uses a potty. I almost cried when he moved into "big boy" vests. Theres something so cute about seeing the vests with poppers drying on the line. I wont put them on him in the summer as he's like his dad and always roasting!!!

Neither of mine wear them in the summer. My 5 year old wears home made wooly vests all winter and coton vests spring/autumn.
My 7 year old will wear a vest if it's stupidly cold.

DD is still wearing them, and I've already bought some for 24 months. I'll probably stop dressing her in them when we start hardcore potty training. :)

(I think vests are onesies, right?)

Thanks ladies. I think I'll stick with them, but maybe get some nice ones for the summer so I can whip off the outer layers if need be, rather than just the boring old white ones I've got at the moment.

I stopped using them when my lo turned 1. I never used them to layer anyway, but she used to sleep in them. I live in the southern US so don't usually have a need to layer.

I still put vests on my 3 year old and 4 year old in the winter, just as a bit of an extra layer for them. Obviously not the popper ones, we stopped with those when we potty trained.

My LO stopped wearing the ones with poppers at about 12 months. He was already too big for the 12-18 month ones (tall boy) and I couldn't easily find bigger ones in NZ. It actually made my life easier not using them as I found doing up the poppers on a wiggly toddler a bit of hard work.

My three year old wears vests. Not the ones with poppers but just ones that go under his t-shirts when it's cold. I switched to those when we potty trained.

We stopped using them last spring or so, which would have been when my daughter was about 15 months old. We don't use them in the summer really anyway because it's too hot. And then I just didn't replace them once the weather turned cold. I didn't find we needed them and really it was just to add an extra layer of warmth anyway, which I didn't feel she needed. Plus it's just an extra thing to buy too, isn't it?

Unless it's very warm I put a vest under what my son is wearing x I managed to get poppered vests in 2-3 but have had to use normal vests since.

My 2 year old is quite short and is still fitting in his poppered vests that are aged 12-18months. I think when he outgrows those I will probably just put him in the age 2-3 hand me down vests (no poppers) we got from my sister. In this cold weather, I like to think the poppered ones are keeping his back warm as they don't ride up but come the spring/summer, I don't think I'll be as worried about that so will stick with normal vests if it's cooler weather.

my lo is 2 years old and she is growing out of her 92/98 sized ones. I dont think I bother getting her 104 sized ones.
