Unfortunately I've come to a decision that I'm going to wean my LO onto formula. I'm having a few problems with breast feeding and am just finding it way too stressful.

So my question is which formula do you find the best? I'm thinking SMA As my mother says I took to that well and was allergic to cow and gate so thought there could be a chance my LO may be...
Any advice would be appreciated!

I use Enfamil a+ the liquid one it's a ready to go formula don't have to add anything and has everything baby needs almost like breast milk it's great the hospital suggested that kind you can find some at walmart

I don't think there's a "best" formula, when I looked into them, they are pretty much the same, it's just down to whatever suits your LO best.

We started on SMA (that's also what I had when I was young) but it didn't suit my LO it caused constipation. So we switched to Aptamil which he has been fine on.

I've heard people say Aptamil is the best one as its the closest to breastmilk - I don't believe a word of it. The composition of formula looks to be fairly heavily regulated, so I don't think one can claim to be better than the other, some ingredients vary slightly i.e. addition of fish oils, increased iron content etc, overall though they are all designed to do the same thing and it's down to what suits!

I would start slow, my ped told me it can take them up to 2 weeks to adjust to formula so don't change it around too much.

I don't know what country you're in but I would just start with the basic regular formula. Over here it's either Enfamil Newborn or Similac Advance which is what they usually feed in hospital. Since your baby is tiny it's probably good to start with the ready to feed liquid for now and then switch to powder.

good luck!

I'd suggest starting with aptamil, purely because it's a thinner textured formula than the others and my be easier of lo to take after having been breastfed. If it isn't suiting lo, then try others. The thickness level goes (thin to thick):
Aptamil, hipp, cow and gate, SMA.
Thought cow and gate and hipp may be the wrong way round!

Hipp organic- haven't heard a bad word about it! Suits my LO just fine, I hear its also quite gentle on the tummy.

It's also a little cheaper than other forumlas because they use sensible packaging.

We were on aptamil 1 but found him to be extra windy on it!

Whatever your lo does best with. I use Gerber good start powder and lo does well with it so I just get that. Find a brand that works for your baby.

Like a pp we are on hipp organic after switching from aptamil which seemed to make lo very windy.

we used aptamil from day 1 with no issues-saying that LO does trump a lot so never thought it may be the formula!! I wont change it htough as hes not upset by it and gets on well with it so woulndt want to interfere.

Have you tried / considered expressing might be worth a go?If I could have expressed or BF I would have as its cheaper and obv best for LO but moving to formula was the best decision we made

We use cow and gate - purely because it's what the hospital gave her when they needed to put some form of formula down her feeding tube before my milk came in, and she did well on it in there, plus it's pretty universally stocked so there's always some local shop I can run to if we run out (our Tesco tends to go through phases of selling out of it so having a few back up plans - including ones I can walk to if I don't have the car - is handy). Also does a carton version which I use a couple of times a week if I'm going out and about (it's easier than lugging a flask and stuff around) which mattered to us.

She seems to have no complaints - apart from when the bottom of the bottle inconveniently spoils all her milky fun!

We use Cow & Gate - it's what they had in the hospital! You can get ready-made cartons and bottles too which is good for going out and about!

Our LO is on aptamil as I read that it was slightly thinner, more like breast milk etc etc...
She is doing ok on it but sometimes becomes very very fussy after a feed and crys alot, I am not sure if this is down to colic or the milk.

Thanks for the post, shes only been on formula a week so I dont want to switch her milk just yet so will keep a eye out to see if things settle and may try cow and gate if aptamil doesnt work.

xx
