Which is the best highchair for BLW: Antilop or Tripp Trapp?

Hi All,

We're committed to started BLW with LO but are in a complete state of confusion about which high chair to buy. We live abroad and our options are severely limited: either IKEA's Antilop or the Stokke Tripp Trap.

I would get the Antilop if it had a proper harness, that's what's stopping me. I know about the DIY solution with the mothercare harness but I'm reluctant to apply a DIY solution to such an important safety item as a highchair. Plus all our floors are tiled and I live in fear of LO falling on his head on the floor.

At the moment this choice is fairly academic since the TT is out of stock and will come back in stock "when the next Stokke Boat arrives"!

Opinions, thoughts and ramblings gladly received!

The antilop have a small belt. It would be very very difficult for lo to fall out esp in your prescense.

I'd def say antilop best until they are 1ish as it's so easy to clean and so cheap.

Tripp trapp good for toddlers and children.

No experience of the TT, but we have a antilop high chair and it worked really well for us for BLW. I like that it is entirely wipe able, plus it is a smaller size than some of the other high chairs on the market - some I tried Eva in she couldn't hardly reach the tray at 6 months to be able to self feed. Plus the legs come off easily which make it portable - we regularly take it to grandparent's houses in the car. I know what you mean about the strap though - don't know why they don't make it with a proper harness. Eva went through a brief phase of trying to escape from it. I did try the mothercare harness, but wasn't that keen - I ended up just telling her off sternly when she tried to escape and after a while she stopped trying again.

Overall I think it's a great high chair. Given the price you could try it and then sell it on on ebay if it doesn't work for you

We have an antilop with a mothercare harness and its not really a DIY solution as the mothercare harness is designed to use with highchairs (so its not as if you wouldn't be doing things properly iyswim). We use it with our 18 month old houdini and it keeps her contained.
The Tripp trapp is so expensive and I think the main benefits are 1. It is quite stylish once you take off the baby bit, 2. It lasts til they are quite old.
I wouldn't worry about number 2 because by the time the antilop is too small (3?) they can just sit on a regular chair. Most 2yr olds I know don't use high chairs anymore.

The antilop is great, we've never had any problem with the harness. My parents used it for DS1 up until he was about 2 and a half. He fitted fine and was happy to sit in it. He would probably still go in it if we hadn't had DS2.

We use the antilop and the strap it has is just fine! LO hasn't come close to falling out. Its nice, cheap and easy to clean! And trust me - the cleaning part sucks!

We use Antilop too mostly for easy cleaning, but also because of inflatable insert that means our svelte lo doesn't bang about like a pea in a drum!

I like the Antilop BECAUSE it has no harness - I would never leave Maddie unattended while eating anyway and if she chokes/gags I can grab her out really easily and pat her on the back - I would hate for LO to be in trouble and be fussing with a harness... just the other side of the coin.

xx

Love the antilop, agree with pp about the harness, sometimes we use it, sometimes we don't. Doesn't make a difference as I don't leave LO unattended anyway :) also, the antilop is fab for cleaning! If it's super messy I will stick it in the shower!
