When he's tired or mid dropping off to sleep he starts to drag his fingers from eyes down to cheek, pausing in the way to stick them in his closed eyelids?!?!

It must hurt a bit!! Why do they do it?!?! :)

Oh god isabelle used to do this, she would stick her fingernails in and drag, really made me cringe! She no longer does it though :)

My baby does this too and then makes himself cry!! I cant wait for him to grow out of it!!

I think it's because they get the same feeling we do when we rub our eyes but don't understand that doing it deep/rough will hurt. My baby does other things including that (deliberately trying to throw himself backwards off the couch, deliberately bumping head against wall) and as I'm stopping him I think, doesn't he know that he's hurting himself?! Obviously not yet!

Logan does this too! It drives me mad as he then cries after he's poked himself in the eye! He also pulls his own hair and then wonders why it hurts...

My son does this! He also digs his finger nails into his face too, and he's always covered in scratches. I wish I knew how to make him stop. I tried covering his hands, but he won't have it. People who see him must think we're awful parents. Oh well, hopefully it's just a phase.

Mine does this too..and then cries! As PP said it must be like us rubbing our eyes but they just go in full force!! Ouch...

She also grabbed my nipple the other day and pulled really hard with her sharp nails!!!! Then Icried!!!

Hahahaha! Im one for walking round with no top/bra on under my dressing gown, wont be doing that again! Nipple cripple from a baby...ouchhhh!

Phew! Thought I just had a weird one!!

Yeh, he's always got scram marks on his face and I feel the same, but scratch mittens would send him berserk, he likes to suck 2fingers and a thumb at the same time!!

It looks so painful, doesn't it! Holly sometimes does this when tired and it makes me cringe!

So cute.

Urgh Calum does this too. I'm scared he'll blind himself one day. He also like the two fingers and a thumb sucking, though is trying to go for the whole hand!!

His new thing is sticking his fingers in MY eyes or up my nostrils and grabbing my nose that way

Ah there are other babies who do this too! Charlotte currently has about 3 scratches around her eyes. I too was thinking we must look like terrible parents. We try to cut and file her nails all the time, but I don't know if she is hiding a fingernail sharpener in her cot?!

I always say i know when Alice is tired because she tries to pull her ear off! :dohh:

When LO gets overtired, she digs at her eyesballs like they're giant boogers that must be excavated. If you try to stop her, she just does it harder.

DD digs and rubs her eyes to the point where she turns her eyelids inside out. The first time it happened I thought her little eyeball might pop out and I couldn't get it to flip back the right way. She's even managed to flip both inside out at the same time!

My son does this as well as clawing at the side of his head with his nails when he is sleepy. I think it's a reflex like we rub our own eyes or play with our hair when we're tired. Only difference is they don't realize they shouldn't be so rough.
