Will I get an early scan?

Hi Ladies my first post in the pregnancy section Im really excited & extremely nervous aswell! I was just wondering if anyone could help me, would i get an early scan with having 2 previos miscarriages?

Thought i'd answer on here since I have bedtime not morning sickness and I cant sleep, they will do a dating scan if you go in and pretend your clueless about the dates that seems to be the way to go? xxx ps happy first post!!!!!

I got one at 9 weeks, because thats how far along i was when I went for the first time! it was wonderful for the reassurance factor. I would say just tell them you have no idea about the dates and ask if they do a dating scan.. they can schedule on asap!

I think with having 2 miscarriages they should definitely be scanning you earlier and more frequently to be on the safe side.

Hi , I think they will offer you an early scan , i know i got them after my 2nd loss and i didnt have to ask for one.But i would ask if they dont offer , like the other girls said act a little clueless on your dates .Good luck hun xxx

Thanks when my doctors test comes back positive next week and i have an appointment im going to demand one if they dont ask! And i am actually pretty clueless to how far along i am awell and just really worried something bad might happen again!

I have had two mmc and, when I went to my GP this time, they booked me in for a 7 week scan at the EPU straight away. I think a lot depends on your doctor really - last time my doctor told me I would have to lie and say I'd had bleeding for him to refer me. It was awful as I then thought I'd tempted fate when I lost the baby

Congrats! I think the general answer is no, but this depends on a lot of variables. Most PCTs won't give you a reassurance scan until after 3M/Cs, but others will. I had scans at 6 and 8 weeks due to a threatened mc but was told there would be no reassurance scans as EPU is so very busy and there are girls who were much more urgent.

I would be careful pushing for a dating scan too. I have heard of many girls who get their dating early, then are refused as 12 week scan as these are only (unless you get a NT) for dating purposes, which seems a shame. If you really can't wait, maybe get a private scan, you can normally get one for around £50. Good luck

Hi Zoe,

I think the answer is it depends on where you live. I've read lots of mums posts who say their doc has referred them for one after one or two misscarriages.

My MMC was discovered at 14 weeks. The consultant I saw at the hospital after the MC had told me I would get an early scan for reassurance in any susequent pregnancies. My GP when I went to see her for this pregnancy told me I could get one too (all this was without me asking). She gave me the number to phone to arrange it myself.

When I called the Early Pregnancy Unit to arrange it I was told that they only scan within the first twelve weeks and only then if it is after the point at which you miscarried previously. I was told it would not be reassuring. (excuse me but how did they know what would or would not reassure me??) This made me a bit angry and frustrated. I ended up booking a private scan at 10 weeks which cost me £65. It was well worth it for the peace of mind it brought me.

Congrats! I think it my depend on protocol in your pct, some would seem to offer it after 2 mc others at 3....
I would just try pushing them for an appointment or even try calling the EPU direct and see what they say. XXX

If I were you I'd go for a private dating scan too. I went for one at 9+2 just to reassure myself (i hadnt had any MCs though) and had my NHS one at 14 weeks. It was lovely to see the baby bigger and when we were out of the ' high risk' period. It must be worrying for you but I'm sure you can understand why the EPU doesnt give reassurance scans as girls who are bleeding or think theyre mcing need the scans more urgently.

hello i no this is a very worring time i had 2 m/c previous to this and went to see midwife i got no early scan witch i thought was soo daft as i was worrying all the time had my scan at 12 and a half weeks , was an awful time for me , i think it does depend on where u live though because i no a lot of people who did get one due to this , hope u do hun xxx
