Wisdom tooth removal. Terrified

I just need some reassurance really.

I went to the dentist today because I've been having pain in one of my top back teeth (not my wisdom) but my dentist did an X-ray and it's showing that my wisdom tooth needs a filling, which I'm fine with. But my dentist has told me that because of the position of the wisdom tooth it can be difficult to fill them particularly if it's a deep filling that needs doing and that being unable to fill will most likely lead to extraction.

Now he hasn't said he's definitely going to take it out but I've got such a fear of having teeth pulled. I had an extraction last year and even thinking about it now makes me cry. It was uncomplicated and over in minutes but just thinking about going through it again makes my heart beat fast and my palms go sweaty. I've been googling about extraction as I've heard wisdom teeth are the worst to remove and naturally it's nothing but horror stories, so I've been toying with asking if it does come to having it removed, asking if I can be put to sleep but then webmd said that general anaesthetics come with a risk of death. I'm so anxious  I feel like I want to phone the dentist first thing in the morning and cancel my appointment because I already know that if the dentist wants to take it out I'll freak out.

I'm so scared I don't know what to do. I'm terrified

I had all 4 removed at the same time, all in crooked positions. I got loaded up on ibuprofen and coolpads and I never felt any pain , so dont worry (ok during the op they had to put a bit more anaesthetic on one of the teeth as it was a bit too crooked but oncethat was done it was fine.

I had mine out years with no problems. Like you i'm very anxious and i'm currently waiting for an 'op' date to be put to sleep to have my teeth out.

I've never had any teeth out but have looked after people who were going to (under general anaesthetic) when I worked, for a short spell, in a pre-op clinic.

A number of people (not sure what proportion) have their wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic (go to sleep for it), generally due to a phobia of dentists. It is a relatively quick day case procedure. Yes there are risks to the anaesthetic, but if you are fit and well, these risks are very, very small. You should see the health of some of the people who have general anaesthetics - they are on a list of medications as long as your arm and they have every medical diagnosis going.

Before you have a general anaesthetic, you have an appointment in a pre-op clinic. There they will take your blood pressure, height and weight, and do any other investigations indicated by your medical history. These are simple tests, such as an ecg (tracing of your heart), blood tests or peak flows. Some people with more complex medical history may have to have tests in other departments of the hospital (such as heart investigations). The aim of this appointment is to ensure you are as fit and well as you can be for the anaesthetic. Usually, your appointment will be with a nurse, and you will see an anaesthetist before the operation (either at the pre-op clinic or on the day of the surgery).

I had mine removed under sedation. Was silly really as I have no fear of the dentist or extractions etc, but she refused to remove it so I had to wait 3 months!

Sedation was fine, I woke up a bit woozy but had no recollection of any tooth being removed!

Could you ask if that's an option?

Urgh, I feel your pain (no pun intended). I'm terrified of the dentist, so much so that I don't go very often  , the result being that I now have to have two teeth out next week. I'm dreading it as, like you, I've had an extraction before and it was not pleasant. If it was an option I'd probably opt for going under a general, but mine aren't wisdom teeth and should be very straightforward, so it's happening at the dentists. None of this is very helpful, but I just wanted to say that I understand :hugs:

I had mine removed about 2 years ago, and had general anesthesia to put me under for the procedure. I didn't even remember anything beyond him asking me to count to 10, just woke up a bit woozy. It was a pretty straight-forward procedure. Mine had all cut through, so they didn't have to do quite as much work to remove them as if they were still impacted. My mouth was sore for about 3-4 days, and I took prescription strength tylenol that they prescribed for the pain. Aside from that, it really wasn't bad at all, hun.

I had one taken out as an emergency at the dental hospital. It was totally pain free but eugh at being able to hear them wiggling it from inside your ear lol. I got my gum numbed so I didn't feel the needle going in at all

I think it's the noise that bothers me more than anything.

The tooth I had removed last year was already broken and they couldn't remove it at my surgery so I had to go to a specialist because I needed gums cut and stitches, and it was awful. The room was so clinical, the oral surgeon that did it was horrific, he wouldn't let me put my hands over my ears to try and block the noise, he didn't stop when I screamed for a break, he wouldn't give me more injections despite me telling him I could feel him cutting my gums open and on top of that he told me I needed to man up. He was awful.

Even the recovery was horrendous. It took 2 weeks before I was pain free and I'm not kidding I cried everyday for that amount of time, the problem I have is that if he can't fill the tooth he'll want to take it out there and then so there won't even be time to prepare for it to come out but at the same time I know I wouldn't go back if I had to make an appointment to have it removed.

I know there isn't much I can do I just can't get over the panic that it might be removed.

Is there nowhere else you can go? he sounds absolutely awful, and no way I'd be going back there either. I'd definitely be looking for a new oral surgeon.

The only other place is the hospital but that's only if they put you under a general anaesthetic, which I'm terrified of doing also. I also struggle with going to the hospital. My mum passed away in hospital 2 years ago and I can't even look at the building when I pass it.

I was told by the receptionist my actual dentist does extractions, I think I was sent to the specialist last time because the tooth was broken but also I don't think my last dentist could do them. If I could have it done at my surgery I might be ok. Idk.

Hopefully your dentist will be able to do the extraction for you rather than sending you back to that other guy. General anesthesia wasn't bad at all, though, nothing to be afraid of hun. yes, there are risks with it, but there are risks with anything. Even just removing a tooth has risks. But they are typically minimal risks. My experience with it wasnt bad at all, just took me a bit to fully wake up. I didn't feel sick from it or anything.

I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago. One was crooked but all of them had erupted enough that I didn't need surgery to have them removed. I was just numbed up, and the dentist pulled them. I've since had a really bad molar removed. Neither time was very bad, just a little unnerving to hear the noise inside my head. But actually, my wisdom teeth were easier to pull than the molar because the roots aren't as deep and the teeth aren't as big. Of course it depends on if it's impacted or not (mine weren't) but it's worse thinking about it than it actually is in my experience. Hopefully you get it sorted out though and the tooth stops bothering you.

Hugs hun. I've had all 4 wisdom teeth out due to not having a big enough jaw and serious pain and gum infections when they were forcing their way in. I was absolutely shitting a brick but it was fine in the end just with local anaesthetic.

You poor thing. :hugs:

I had my wisdom teeth removed 2 years ago and I was scared to death because I would be put to sleep, which is what I preferred, but I was so scared. But honestly, it was okay. DH stayed with me the entire time up to when I fell "asleep" and it was like someone snapped their fingers and it was done. I don't ever remember falling asleep or waking up, it was such an odd feeling! Recovery was kind of annoying not being able to eat much but it wasn't too bad. I thought it was going to be much, much worse but it was fine.

I had mine taken out at once, they were all impacted. I wad under general anesthesia, I had other parts of my mouth worked on at the same time. I was just groggy after, all day I was really sedated feeling but I was fine after that. I was given hydrocodine, but it made me too drowsy I was fine on just regular dose ibuprofen.

I had all four out at once, as well, with just a local. All I felt with it was some vibrations and pressure. And it actually went faster than expected. I won't say it was a walk in the park, but it wasn't that bad, either.

Recovering was probably worse than the procedure for me but that was because I ended up finding out I have a natural resistance to vicodin, so the prescription pain meds they give me didn't help very much.

I'm going to ask him if he'll want to remove the tooth there and then if he can't do the filling and if that's the case I'm going to ask him to look at some other teeth first because I'm still not convinced it's the wisdom tooth causing the problem.

I had the tooth next to my wisdom tooth out last year and it's the tooth next to the gap that hurts, and that's why I went in the first place so I have no idea how I got myself into possibly having a tooth removed. I'm shitting myself

Hi there I had all 4 taken out and I was awake in the chair, I didn't need any cutting or stitches though. I was very drugged up on gas which I loved, it wasn't painful, I could just feel the tugging. It was a bit painful for a week or so afterwards but they gave me some good painkillers which helped a lot. It's a relief not having my wisdom teeth coz they were growing crooked so i couldn't clean around them and they were getting infected. they're better gone!
