working tax credits

i'm going to apply for this tomorrow, just wondering can it all be done over the phone or are forms needed also. and how long does it take to go through?

I rang up and they did an estimate over the phone then sent me a form to apply for them, they took about 6 weeks and it was backdated - though that might be because I'd just had a baby, im not sure if they do it for everyone
