I'm really worried about how much my baby is taking in milk. She is only 2days old, but the midwives are making a massive issue on how much she is drinking. She is bottle fed on aptimal, and is only taking about 2oz max every 3-4hours. I'm trying to get her to take more as the midwife says this is not enough, but she is a really really sleepy baby, and either won't wake for feeds, or falls asleep while being fed and will just refuse the bottle. I've read that pethidine during labour can make the baby really sleepy and can cause problems feeding, and I had two injections, but the last one was about 5-6 hours before the birth and I've been told it would've been out of her system by then? I had a bit of a nightmare during labour, and am in alot of pain from it, and this is causing me so much extra worry at the moment I just feel completely useless, has anyone else had a problem with really sleepy babies or not taking enough milk? Is it something that'll just come in time? Please

i had peth injection n it doesnt cause problems well didnt for me! dont worry about her feeding she will start eatin more wen shes ready shes only 2 days old! zane was bf for first 4 days n didnt have alot at all but was fine even now at 9 weeks he sometimes will only have 2oz every 3 hours hes now on aptimol aslong as she seems ok to u n she gains weight she will be fine dont let them scare u ur mum n u no best for ur baby

Thank you, If it wasn't for the midwives constantly hounding me then I would feel fine because she seems happy in herself (When shes awake that is) I was induced a week early as I was measuring small, she was born 5lbs and 11oz so I can see why they want to make sure she is feeding well but they are being so full on, I'm dreading every single one of their visits!

no matter what they say dont let them scare u they r supposed to help n 9 times out of 10 they dont i was lucky with my hv but mw who delieved my baby wasnt very nice n i didnt like ones i saw after i had him either lol.

at first babies loose weight n then gain n yeah she was a small baby but atleast she is feeding and is gettin more in the sence of volum of food then if u were bf.

if shes happy then u shud be too :) good luck hope she starts eatin more soon

That is all Jasmine drank in the first few days... Their bellies hae to become accustom to it.

Sounds normal to me. I thought I'd read somewhere that newborns only drink 2-3 ounces every 3-4 hours. For Hannah she only drank around 3 ounces every 3-4 hours the first few weeks, and she was 8 pounds 10 ounces at birth!

The day we came home from the hospital, Alexa went 9 hours without eating, she slept all day, and wouldn't eat. I called the public health nurse and she said to bring her into the hospital if she wasn't eating by the night. Thankfully she went back to eating after that. Oh, and come to think of it, her first day of life she barely ate either, we had tonnes of visitors in all day and if I am thinking correctly, she ate at 10 am, and then not again til 6!! It was crazy because she was supposed to be eating every 2-3 hours. But everything was fine. I should say she was a bit jaundiced though. hope everything is okay!

A newborn's stomach is only the size of a walnut. If your birth was traumatic for you it could also have been traumatic for your baby, she may need a little time to get over it. Try not to worry too much, breast fed babies only take tiny amounts for the first few days until the milk comes in so I don't see why formula fed babies would be any different.
