My neighbour has just gone on holiday to Yemen for 2 months to see her husband. She has left her 14 yr old son home alone and he is now partying loudly in the house next door. Would you report this? I really don't think it is safe for a 14 yr old to be left for 2 months but is it a case for social services?

one big fat worded answer...

YES!

Sorry but 14 is just not old enough... surely its not even legal???

Id report it yes.

It's not illegal though as far as I'm aware.

I would report it. All children are different but if he's partying loudly alreadybi's be concerned about what he might get up to without any parental influence for two months. He might be fine but I would be uneasy.

ummm if its not illegal im not so sure..., if the boy is being a menice it maybe worth highlighting it though... dropping in he's alone for 2 months...

my parents would have NEVER have left me at that age alone... so sad really.

Depends what the legal age to be left unsupervised is as to what would happen, I think.

Why don't you phone the police about the noise disturbance & allow them to call social services if they deem it necessary.

Even if not illegal, I would report it for his own safety

Who would leave a 14 year old SCHOOL CHILD alone for 2 months :/

I would make enquiries xx

Oh my goodness, two months!!! Whatever about leaving a 14 year old for a couple of days, that would depend on the maturity of the child, but I don't think any 14 year old should be left alone for that long! I would definitely talk to someone about it.

We just rang the police and complained about the noise and mentioned his mother is away and police have just escorted him from his home. I feel a harsh now but last summer I caught him trying to set fire to the fence separating our gardens so for safety reasons I don't think he can be trusted to look after himself

I was left alone for a week once at 14 (with my neighbours beady little eyes on me at all times :haha:) it was fun for like the first 2 days then it was boring, lonely and hard work cooking for myself :nope: I'd definatley report it though, 2 months is far too long! Are you sure he's completely alone and doesnt have family popping in every day or 2?

No she told me when they moved in last year she has no family round here. The only people going in and out this week have been kids

There isn't actually a legal age to leave a child on their own in the UK but if you leave your child alone and something happens to them and it is deemed that you were neglecting their welfare then you would find yourself in trouble.

Poor kid. Even at like 16/17 I used to get upto mischief when the 'rents went away! I think next time its noisy, ring the police and just drop in you know his parents are away for 2 months x
