Hi girls,

Some background: DH and I have been TTC since Jan. 08. Got pregnant in May 08, but had a mmc (blighted ovum) in June 08. Have been trying again since Oct. 08 and nothing. On the 11 cycle mark went to a fertility specialist who did all the tests, including HSG. All came back ok, except the APi-1 blood clott, but this has more to do with staying pregnant. My DH sperm analysis was 35% motility (a bit on the low side, right???) and high volume (60 ml).

The doctor said that he can't really find anything that is wrong with us, that would have prevented us from conceiving. Then he dropped the bomb by saying that we have only 1% chance of conceiving on our own, just based on the statistics!!! :saywhat: I had never heard that if a couple doesn't conceive in 11 cycles, then they only have a 1% chance of getting pregnant on their own. My DH thinks this is crazy and that the doctor is trying to push IVF (it is a private clinic) for $$. I am so devastated... if the doctor can't find something that is very wrong with us, how can he say we only have 1% change of getting pregnant on our own?? :growlmad: Has anyone been told this type of thing? I emailed a friend who is a FS and she agrees with the first doctor, that our changes are very low.

Thanks!

Hi there, I am no fertility specialist but that seems very strange. My friend who is 40 and had IVF which apparently failed because of her egg quality has been told they still had about 5% chance on their own each month. I thought if you are under 35 and have been pregnant once already you would have a good chance in your second year of ttc. But like I say, I don't know. It's such a strange world of chance it seems. Good luck. x

Hi Greta, thanks! Yeah, I think it is very strange too... I am 29 btw. I am so confused.

I don't agree with your doctor at all especially with a natural bfp. I would put your results more like 10-15% depending on the sperm count. Now the chance of a life birth that is a different story.
Also I think you made a mistake when you said dh's volume. There is no way that any man can have a 60mL volume. 6 yes, not 60.

That is crazy Meli............i have not heard that before..........that sounds terrible...........well then im there with you in that 1%........i wouldn't take that for an answer at this point.

PMA........if possible.....grrrrrr

That just doesn't sound right to, although I am no expert. I would DEFINATELY get a second and maybe third opinion just to be sure for my own piece of mind. Good luck:hugs:

girls! thank you so much for your inputs... I am glad to know that I am not the only one thinking this 1% chance thing is CRAZY! I don't buy it... I will agree that maybe my chances are not 25% per cycle anymore, but not that it is only 1%. I don't know what this doc is thinking. I am not even upset about it anymore, bc I it doesn't make any sense.

the low motility could hinder your chances yes but you should have higher then 1% we were told after 12 months with about 45% motility, only 22.6 million sperm and 10% morphology that we have like a 3 to 5% chance of conceiving. I would suggest asking about IUI instead of IVF it is WAY cheaper and with only low motility you would make a great candidate.

Not to sound blunt but that is utter bollocks. They say that 80% of people will have conceived within 12 months, 90% within 18 months and the rest will be investigated for infertility. The reason they don't start seriously investigating until after 18 months is because there are still 10% of couples who will conceive between 12 and 18 months naturally.

That is standard statistics.

Yes, his motility is slightly low but there are things you can do to help that (Zinc, Ginseng, change in diet, etc) but he is pulling that 1% statistic out of his own head.
