.

I guess it is a personal preference. I know that for me, I have always wanted a baby RIGHT NOW, so I never wanted to wait. :haha:

You really need to consider the end result when deciding how long to wait. Do you want 3 kids by the time you are 41? Then you need to be pregnant already. Do you want 2 kids that are 2 years apart? Then if you got pregnant now, you would deliver when you are 39, then you would ttc when you are 40 or 41 to have baby #2, at which time it might get more difficult.

If you only want one child, then I think you could wait it out for 6 months, but I wouldn't wait too much longer than that. Sure, there are lots of women that get pregnant easily when in their late 30s, but there are plenty that struggle too. You don't know which boat you will be in, so I wouldn't waste too much time. It's normal to take up to a year to conceive naturally at 38. So, that just pushes back the age at which you can start to ttc for #2.

I would be very proactive and use opks, temp, and research fertilityfriend.com for charting info until you decide you are ready for intervention.

Good luck. I hope you get your bfp soon and don't even have to worry about the doctors.

Hi - I'm 39 and had DS#1 at 35 but have been TTC #2 for 2 years. I found out recently that I have a below average fertility which is why it is hard for me to get pregnant now I am older it has declined. On the other hand I have a friend who is 40 TTC #1 and has high fertility but DH has sperm problems so they are doing IVF. So you never know until you start trying or get tested - with hindsight I would have liked to have known more about my fertility at a younger age so I could have made more informed decisions (eg we delayed TTC #2 but may have started sooner if I had known). If you are concerned about medical intervention, there is no need to take any treatment if you don't feel ready but at least knowing your and DH's fertility levels will help you both make an informed decision. Lots of people get pregnant in their late 30s and early 40s but from a medical perspective the older you are, not only the lower the chances but also they greater the risks to the mother and baby, which is why doctors are keen to get things moving. It's better that your doc is encouraging you to get checked out early than making you wait a year or more. Good luck whatever you choose and I hope you get your BFP soon!

Definitely bring all your charting with you when you see a specialist. You can show them how long you've been ttc and that you have actually been having sex during your fertile time of the month. Over 35 they say 6 months of trying, under 35 1 year. If your doctor is willing at 2 months, then by all means get tested. Even if you don't get treatment right away, it's good to know if there are going to be any potential problems.
Kismet, I buy the cheapest opk's I can find on ebay and they've always worked well for me.

I understood it as 6 months if your over 35 and most fertility specialists wont see you if its under and the general rule is 1-2 years if your under 35.

I am 38. We got pregnant on 2nd cycle of actively TTC. BUT, I miscarried that one and waiting for hormones to level out has cost us two months, then BFN in month three, so all told, here we are, 7 months after we first TTC, and still no baby to take home with us. I am seeing a fertility specialist in 6 days, bc I don't want to lose any more time.

Personally, I would go with what your doc recommended. If anything, the specialist can just track you closer if you do get PG naturally, to make sure all is progressing well. Good luck.

Thanks for starting this thread. I always wondered if people saw a FS before 6 months of TTC. I'm about to turn 35 (DH is 40, with 3 kids...9-yr old twin girls and a 7-yr old boy). We've been TTC since April, so if we don't get a BFP by September, I'll get referred to a FS. Praying that all of us get a BFP VERY soon (summer time BFPs! :))

I went to see specialist yesterday. She was very clear that while they would go ahead and perform tests, they wouldn't push IUI or IVF unless that was ABSOLUTELY the way I wanted to go. She said I was the one making the decisions. So, yep, we're getting the full gamut of tests run. I don't have a lot of time to play around with.
